Good evening all,

My folks' tiller is leaking oil out of the throttle linkage hole in the block; it's never done that before that I'm aware of.

The tiller surges and won't run steady, so I was going to inspect the carb. However while looking at it I noticed that in 3 minutes of running at WOT it had given up approx 1/4 cup of oil. I shut it down immediately.

Any thoughts?

Evening DJ.

Air filter looks fairly good. Is there any way that might cause it to leak oil from the governor arm?

You've got crankcase pressure. There is also a breather on the backside of the engine. If it's clogged, it will blow oil.

Morning DJ,

There is a breather tube coming from the engine case and going into the carb. I had it out a few months ago to check it, and it was clean.

Just thinking out loud now... if the carb hole that the vent tube goes into was clogged, it would not vent properly.

I'll check the backside of the engine.

KRS,
May also be worth pulling the rectangular cover off that the breather tube is attached to (the breather box over the valve springs/stems). If I remember correctly most of those covers had a set up inside them that functions like a PCV valve. It that were to get mucked up or jammed it would certainly cause your issues.

It should look similar to this; http://cgi.ebay.com/Tecumseh-breather-body-assembly-28423-/140510967368

I agree that the breather could be blocked causing increased pressure. Also check the oil level, the needle valve leaking in the carb and filling the crankcase with gas is a common problem. The oil level may be to high and thinned by the leaking gas.

+1 Check the oil level, bet it is too full (either of oil or oil gas mix or oil/water mix

Not sure how the seal gets installed, from the outside? Never taken it out or seen one.

No repair manual either.

i doubt it could put gas in the crankcase due to the design of the intake manifold. gas would run out the air filter first. my money's on being overfilled w/ oil.

If you aren't sorted out by the weekend I'll bring my repair manual back from the cottage and we can see if there are any revelations in it...:)

Thank you.

I'll check: oil level, breather, breater port on carb

Should get into it tonight (had to go out of town last night),

Bought 40 bags of manure yesterday, so need to get the tiller going.
