I'm new to boating, I have an older Evinrude 100 hp engine, I got it started for the first time this summer, had a hose hooked up to it and it seemed to over heat, Water appeared to come out of all the places it should come out of. So Why was it over heating? Is there a hose possibly blocked or a pump that should be working and how do I discover these out, and what do I look for.

Start by telling us what year your 100hp is.

Why do you think it "seemed to overheat"?

I think its an 1978, and I think its over heating because i heard it crackling in the engine housing.

You should see a strong flow from the telltale in the lower cowling. Just because you have a strong telltale does not mean it won't overheat. The engine has two thermostats, one for each head. If they don't open at 143 degrees, cooling water can't circulate through the powerhead and you'll get an overheat. You could rent or borrow a laser temp gun and check the temps when the engine gets warmed up. 212 is an overheat.

Re: Older 100hp Evinrude motor question

Thanks, I actually put the motor down in a tank of water and it seemed to suck the water up better, I changed the spark plugs also. My next question is should there be a fuel filter near the motor? I followed the fuel line from the tank to the motor and could not find one there and cannot see one in the engine does this make sense.
And for this engine it is actually a 1979 100hp Evinrude should I mix the fuel/oil at 50:1 or 40:1??

50:1. There should be a filter screen under the plastic cap on the fuel pump.

Those older engines really don't have a good fuel filter on them-only the one described by FR. On these models, I cut the tank fuel line and put a white Bombardier in-line fuel filter that matches the hose size (5/16" or 3/8". It's handy to mount it on the line in the splashwell where it is visible.
