I have an older 9.9 evy, late 70's early 80's.. I just tried it out and i can't seem to get my old 14 tinner to plane out. Its fine with 1 person , but add 2 and it just can't get over the hump... it almost does.. I've replace the condensor, and the two coils....the throttle seems to be at its fullest...is there anyway to adjust the throttle, or should i look into new plugs and wires first.. the motor came of my friends 14ft aluminum and i remember it would plan out no problem...

make sure you have proper compression, before spending anymore money. find a screwin compression tester, pull the rope 4 times, get the readings on both cylinders, and post them. make sure you have good crisp spark that will jump 3/8 to 1/2 inch.

Bang on. Do a compression check.

The motor sometimes seems like its going to go, then it slows down,,,, its almost like its staving itself of fuel,,, but it never goes down to a stall. It seem to keep a constant rpm at full throttle. It just seems like it just needs a little more of something. The motor was sitting for 4 yrs before i got it,,, maybe some carb cleaner or something? New plugs?

if you want us to help you diagnos the problem, please do the steps we ask. we have to trouble shoot, in order to get to the root of the problem. there is no point in putting parts on a motor that has bad compression, that would have to be fixed first, or it will never run correctly. no matter how much you spend on parts. thanks. now what are the compression and spark results?

jay, not trying to insult you but everybody thinks there is some majic thing that will cure all. There are procedures to be followed in order to troubleshoot, especially when you are not there to look at it. Sometimes there is something obvious that will stand out, but doing it online it is a little harder to see it sometimes.

I got the call today, the compression in both cylinders is the almost the same but within specs.. occording to him... Not sure on the numbers, but i know he knows what hes talking about.

9.9 is marginal for a 14 foot V or semi-V. You can probably get it to plane with the extra load with a low-pitch prop, but you may not get the top end you want.

If it sat for 4 years it is time to rebuild the carb. Squirting some carb cleaner won't hack it.
