OMC 3.0L WONT START NEED HELP

i was wondering if someone here could help me out with this one. I let my brother in law take my 88 bayliner with a omc 3.0 liter out and while he was going the boat motor just shut out wont start back up when try. Now I took it home and try all the stuff that needed to try like spark plugs, gas got through, battery, disturbutor. The problem is the motor would crack and sound like it would turn over when i crack it and hold the key in position, but once i let go it stop. If u have this problem before or know what i should check please help thanks

It's not difficult to diagnose a problem if you take it one step at a time.<br /><br />You're first port of call is electrical. Gunna need a DVM. You got a DVM?<br /><br />Aldo

does the motor start momentarily then die when the keyswitch is released from the start position to the run position? is this what your describing ?

Do you have a Kill switch on the engine? if so make sure it is working correctly. Sounds like what happens when I leave the cord off my kill switch.

rodbolt thats pretty much what happen everytime i start the engine when i turn the key and hold on to it the motor sound like its going to turn over but once i let go it die

Your coil gets power from 2 seperate sources. <br />1. From the starter when the engine is cranking.<br />2. From the ignition switch.<br /><br />When the starter is engaged, you have extra voltage for starting, and from the sounds of your post this is working.<br />When you go back to the run position there is no power (Check with your meter at the + terminal on the coil for 8 to 10 volts with ign. sw. in run position)<br />If you don't have voltage, it could be the ign, switch, the kill switch, or a wiring connection bad. Just use your meter to locate where the power stops.
