I have a 83 Concord with a 3.8 V6, no outdrive. What outdrive should I put on it a 400 or a 800 series? Will a 400 hold up?

That would be an 800, with the V6 gear set, full mechanical shift lower unit.

A 400 not only has the wrong gear set, but also is not built as stout. They were used only on 4 cylinder 2.5's and 3.0's.

Welcome to iboats MoonDog. Not enough info here. What did the boat start out with?

Don't know what it came out with. The 400 is supposed to handle 175HP the 3.8 is only rated at 170HP.

Do what you want Moondog, it's your boat. The 400 will fit mechanically. Just make sure you get one with the mechanical shift lower unit, and don't complain if the engine over-revs.

400 reliable to 140HP. Depending on hull design, the smaller lower unit may cause the prop to ventilate.
