OMC Cobra help

Could use a little guidance before it cost me big time.
I have a 88 Seaswirl Spyder OMC cobra outdrive model #985273, 5.7lL high altitude, went to the lake today and after 3+ hours I lost forward and reverse. It was like it just popped out of gear. Any ideas on where to start, the only problem I have had with the boat is that it did not want to go into neutral when idling in to the dock lately.

Chech the oil level and condition in the drive, or a bad engine coupler

Oil level looks good and no leaks. Guess I need to just to tear into it.

Just got the time to Disassembly the lower unit and found the Pinion Gear had sheared off with a small part of the driveshaft still attached. It mangled forward gear and chipped reverse gear. Looks like all the bearings are intact and not chipped, should I replace all of them anyway?
