Our 5.7L cobra sterndrive (1986 unit installed on 1988 sunray mirage) blew the pinion gear upon contact with a sand bar. We are in the process of rebuilding and were curious about the shift point detents. With the new gear set installed and unit on the bench, when moving the shift rod by hand there is a noticeable detent in neutral and reverse, but nothing in forward. Am I correct in assuming that when in forward gear, the clutch dog is held engaged with the fwd gear by the opposing force of the engine + drag on the prop? Any comments much appreciated.

Re: OMC cobra shift detents

hello
if you inspect the lugs of the shift clutch and gear you will notice they are cut at about a 7* draft angle. once locked into position as long as the propshaft has a load its all but impossible to unlock.its a 7* interfence to unlock. that is the whole and sole function or the shift interupt system.it disrupt the ign and takes the load from the prop shaft allowing the sliding clutch to move away from the gear.
good luck and keep posting
as far as a dentent on that model I cant tell by memory but the shfter in the case has a ball and spring arrangement so if it detents at all you have the parts installed in the shifter.
