Mine is a 1989, and I understand there are 2 possibilities of ESA.. one is like what I have or may have.. the other is a timer.
Yes, the newer ESAs used a timer so the overstroke switch was not needed. In fact the plug on the newer ESA is setup to actually bypass the overstroke switch completely.

Well, you do have a problem, and yes you just don't know it yet. Only because you haven't put it in the water yet. Do it, put it in the water for a trial run before you need it and have no time. Then you will be able post your problem.

Wow Don.. I see your a mod on here.. but really harsh posts from you.

Yes Bruce I had read in a couple of places that they are timers, (but didn't want to argue with Don about it). but I didn't know the the set up was wired as such. Thank you. I will search for one.

I converted my boat to the Merc set up and believe it?s the best thing I ever did you just need to make sure the interupter switch works correctly best way is to have someone move the controls for you while you watch the the switch operate, if it gets stuck on the lobe yes it will stall every time. When I converted mine I also replaced the shift cable as well have never had a shift problem since.

The CDI ones have a timer and can also be used with Delco EST distributors at a later time if you decide to change to that distributor. You should contact CDI for the correct one.

Don.. I'm "sensitive" in the evenings.. I take nightly cocktails (drugs) fighting cancer. The meds make me sensitive, and I read your posts as you were spanking me. :)

Sent you a PM, but this is how mine is set up right now.. but.. have not water tested it yet. The closest place here is a fast running river.. and not a place to test a shifting problem.. so when I take it to the coast in Oct I can test it around the calm waters of the inner bay.

They did when they put in the updated ESA with the timer.

Bruceb58 from what I've read he has changed to the Merc set up and from memory you by-pass the ESA and don?t use the over stroke switch only the interrupter switch, you are all mentioning the OMC set up that he is not using.

You definitely still want to use the overstroke switch. It opens up the circuit when the boat is in gear so if the shift switch ends up on that cam lobe because of a sticky cable, the overstroke switch will prevent the ignition from being grounded.

The shift switch and the overstroke switch are in series with each other. The overstroke is normally closed and the shift switch is normally open.

Maybe I should start a new thread... Isn't the overstroke switch, and the interrupter switch side by side on the motor, and the one with the metal arm is the interrupter switch? If you unplug the harness, and run the blue wire to the - side of the coil.. this isn't by passing the overstroke switch is it.. (I know I shouldn't be posting in my condition)

The harness to the ESA has a loop back wire that connects the two switches together. Hopefully, you still have that connector intact. Yes, both switches are on that plate.

Good morning Bruce, awesome thanks for the diagram. Yes, everything is still intact. Only one of my switches has the metal arm though.

The overstroke doesn't have an arm. Just a button.
