After starting my 1991 Four Winns after 20 months of storage, the engine became very hot in my driveway, with the hose "ears" on. I turned the engine off quickly. Later I replaced the impeller in the outdrive, it was not shredded, but looked old and was not working.

I started the engine again, after replacement and now water is shooting out quickly on the right side of the engine when looking aft, under the manifold area.

There also seems to be exhaust entering the engine bay on the left side of the motor somewhere, but no water.

Did the engine overheat and damage the engine or manifolds?

Is this something I can fix myself?

Any help is appreciated.

JimmyTee454

Start it up again, this time LOOK and see where the water or exhaust is coming from. It should only take a few seconds to find the leak.

Thank you both.

I will inspect it more closely tomorrow.

I have a little trouble getting in the crowded engine bay while it is running. I am a very large man.

I may attach a mirror to a rod and see what it looks like.

JT

Okay,

Turns out the flange on the end of the oil cooler came loose. The hose is in good shape. Water was shooting out of the end of it, it is now fully disconnected.

We tried to push the metal flange back on the oil cooler but it kept popping off.

Can this be re-attached to the oil cooler body, or do I have to buy an entire new one? They are 340 bucks on doug russell.

Can I have someone weld it back together, or is there a cheaper alternative.

Thanks

JT

if its not damaged I just clean them and sweat them back on. a good radiator shop can do it as well.
usually caused by freeze damage when using the air only method.

Sorry, I am not very handy, what does "sweat them on" mean?

Any tips on finding a radiator shop?

JT

P.s. Air only - method means not winterizing with fluid?

Thank you all.

I think I will try to find a radiator shop to repair this part.

If that doesn't work I will replace it.

I hope to contribute to this site in the future as I gain more knowledge myself.

JT
