I am having trouble with the lift motor on my '75 OMC stringer 225 hp.

It was lowering fine but had trouble going up, so I bought a new lift motor.

same problem ensued, so I bought and replaced all the solenoids, all it does now is click.

is there something wrong with the wiring? is there a fuse or short somewhere?

Re: OMC lift motor trouble

you must start with a fully charged battery.fully charged i typed it twice because it is the most important.when u look at the outdrive from the back of the boat on the port side the left side u will see a clutch housing.there are 4 screws on the cover pull that cover.u will see all kinds of gunk pour out.how i know that is they all leak.2 things u can do at this point pull the clutch and rebuild the housing with new seals and o-rings or clean out the housing without removing the clutch and gears.if u remove the clutch do not try to take it apart u will need a press to put it back together.soak the clutch in the most powerful solvent u can get your hands on overnight acetone maybe its in home depot.ok blow it dry and then let it soak in motor oil for a hour or 2.put it back together with the new seals and o-rings.if u chose to leave the clutch in spray it with carb cleaner or something stronger blow it dry spray the clutch with penetrating oil or something better than pack the clutch with greese.both ways pack it with greese i know it calls for 30 weight oil but greese is the ticket put it back together do not over tighten the screws will bind the clutch.now under the bumpers there are 2 greese fittings pry off the bumpers gently do not mix them up greese them and put back on the bumpers.you should get a manual. with a new motor and clean connects it should go up easier .good luck

It has got to be an electrical problem, I took out the clutch pack and the motor still will not turn, the motor will however spin when you hook up direct to a battery though. so not sure what the problem is, the solenoids are brand new, and i did not hook them up wrong either.
