Here are some pics of my engine mounts. My lag bolts will just slip in and out and i can stick a rod down in the bolt holes and it feels all rotted in there. I dont really know what to do. I would like to get it going for the rest of the summer and fix it right this winter but i may not have a choice but to fix it right. In a small area like mine is how do u stick wood in there and what do u attach it to. What do yall think. Also do yall know what kind of outdrive this is? The model number is #983486. Any info will be helpful. thanks

I would drill some small test holes in the stringer forward of the mounting holes to get an idea of the condition of the wood away from the bolts. If you are lucky, water seeped into the wood just locally to your mounting bolts and you only have local rot. One method for repair in that case is to saturate the hole with penetrating epoxy resin like a Rot Doctor product or enlarging the hole and filling it with an epoxy resin mixed with a hard filler and redrill the holes.

The drive you have is an OMC stringer drive and relies solely on the stringer attatch points to hold the engine so the condition of the stringers is very critical.

Yea i drilled a couple and I think it is totally rotten inside the mounts. Is that possible to fill the mounts up with epoxy and make it the rest of the year even if its totally rotten?

For those types of repairs, you need good wood and no water to make it work properly. Sounds like the engine is coming out and you are replacing the stringers until you find good wood.

you could try the product from this place:

http://www.rotdoctor.com/

or make it yourself buy mixing epoxy resin with MEK to make your own penetrating epoxy but to do the job correctly, you need to pull the engine and replace the stringers.

I am going to get alot heat for telling you this but here goes.

Measure all the way across the floor where the motor mount- mounts to the floor and up the sides 6-8 inchs both walls.

Aquire piece of steal about 1/4-1/2 inch thick and the width of the motor mount bottom. Bend the steel into a u with the 6 inchs or more on both sides to fit under the motor mount.

Slip the steel under the mount on the floor with the mount on top. Drill 2 holes where the bolts go. Bolt the mount to the steel. Drill 2 new lag bolt holes a few inchs on ether side and drill 2 holes sideways into the wall or stringer and bolt it sideways and into the floor. You might need some big screw type bolts maybe 2 on the walls both sides.

I did this before. It's a strong way to hold the foward motor mount with rotton stringers.

good luck This works with a 4 banger for sure.
