omc or volvo replacement

I am looking at a 1996 24 ft. celebrity with a Volvo 5.8 engine.there is no outdrive on it .it says Volvo on the gimbal ring but I think its a late omc drive.being a 351 motor I am under the imprwession that its a king cobra with shifting in the top housing.i am not having much luck locating one of these so I better make sure I am after the right part.can anyone verify this and also what gear ratio would I need.? thanks

It's not a King Cobra. You'd need an OMC Cobra SX or Volvo SX drive. Should be interchangable if matched to the engine. My 1997 Four Winns was a conglomeration of OMC and Volvo branded parts. The outdrives were Volvo SX. The shift/throttle control was OMC. The valve covers on the GM 4.3 motors had 'OMC Cobra SX' stickers on them. When I needed a new fuel pump, the OMC part number was $10.00 cheaper, and when the dealer pulled it off the shelf it was in a Volvo-Penta box.

My concern would be the Ford motor. Ford has been out of the marine business for about 15 years. Some parts are probably getting scarce. You'd be better off with a GM powerplant.

do you know about the hole in the transom for changing the system over to mercruiser.is it the same?

Sorry, no idea. Why do you want to go to that effort? I think Volvo/OMC SX drives are pretty plentiful. I'll just say again (then I won't mention it anymore :joyous: ) that I wouldn't want to own that motor.

if I new that the mercruiser would line up I would go for a complete mercruiser set up.but I don't know the difference in the hole size between a Volvo and a mercruiser transom assembly.its a very nice boat going for cheap.also I don't know the gear ratio I am looking for.the owner doesn't know.its a 24ft.celebrity bow rider.
