I have 1977 tri hull with a omc 302, stinger unsure of which model. I have heard a lot of bad stuff about OMC, but it is what I have. everything is great but when put in to reverse, idle it works great, when you add power. The out drive raises, (when we first got the boat it reverse was working fine,) I have tested it out of the water it does not raise, my Question is. Is this a comon problem? What locks the outdrive down when in reverse? Has anyone had this problem or does any one have ideas on a solution for this problem?

Out drives WANT to pop out of the water in reverse. Without power trim and tilt, which holds the drive down in reverse, there was a locking bar that held the drive down. I think its spring loaded. HTH

Your clutch pack needs to be rebuilt/re-oiled. It's possible the clutch plates are worn out (mine are). If you don't already have one, grab the service manual from here. It'll have instructions on rebuilding the clutch pack in the tilt mechanism:

There isn't a locking bar on a Stringer. The Stringer is an inboard-outboard, I think you're thinking of an outboard.

Got it. I was. I had an old Johnson outbaord. Figured it was similar.

My 1978 omc 800 (305) does the same thing. I noticed my ball gears were worn on one side so I thought that may be the problem. I've got some other priorities right now with my boat. Let me know what you find out as I'll eventually get to it.

I agree with superbenk, it's the tilt clutch. I have a '75 stringer and one if the first things I did was to rebuild the clutch pack. Make sure you use a new cover plate gasket (or even two) as without it (or if overtightened) it will bind the clutch. If you are going to use oil in the clutch housing as per the manual, check/change it frequently as they do tend to let in a little water which can wreck the clutch disks. There is a thread done by another member (Chiefalen IIRC, do a search) about packing the clutch housing with grease instead of oil to keep the water out that seems to work well.

Another tip, be careful letting the leg down! Don't let it slam down too hard or it can spit the worm gear out the rear. It's happened to at least one member on here. I just bump the switch a few of times and let her down a little at a time.

Good luck!

pull that tilt housing cover off pull out the clutches soak overnite in gasoline then blow dry with compressed air pack some grease in the housing then install the clutches then pack more grease double the old gasket install the cover and hopefully problem solved pss.. use a good marine grease
