Did a compression test on it tonight....

Cyl 1 175psi
Cyl 2 175psi
Cyl 3 176psi
Cyl 4 178psi

Is this normal?

That is basically a NEW engine. Nice.

Try greasing your swivel bearing and go for a run.

Your w/p is prob sucking exhaust gases. The grease will seal it up.

Re: OMC Overheating issue...Help!!

Thanks...The engine runs like a top it really does..Never had a problem with it til now overheating according to gauge anyway...I did some research last night on the temp gauge....I took the wire off of the temp sending unit and shorted it to the block and the gauge did not go to hot..It did not move at all..According to the manual this is a failed gauge. I was wondering all this time. If I turn the ignition on the gauge would read different every time. It would be a difference of 100 degrees sometimes by just turning the key off and on again...really wierd...Can anyone confirm this is a failed gauge?

When you grounded the temp wire did you have the IGN key on? Also if the gauge did not move then too things could be wrong one would be a bad or cut wire some place from the sending unit to the gauge, Or the gauge is bad, Try grounding the gauge it's self by turning the key on and get a extra pices of wire and touch a ground to one end and touch the brown or tan wire at the back of the gauge. [The gauge might have a S on it for sending unit]And see if the gauge moves now.If it does then it is a bad wire and if it does not then it is a bad gauge. Also what ever happend to the IGN timing did you get it set and run it out to see if it still gets hot? Also you really should have been doing all this testing with a infared gun on it to check it all out, Just to make sure the gauge was reading right, And to see if the engine and thermostat and all the other related areas really where getting hot or not:eek::).

Re: OMC Overheating issue...Help!!

Well. I had a friend help me this time to try to troubleshoot the gauge. It tested ok. As far as replacing the impeller. I read through the manual, and it looks like I would need 4 different tools that I do not own. (Shim gauge, feeler gauge etc...) So I broke down and took it to my mechanic to have the impeller replaced. Also, checked the upper unit oil yesterday just to give everything a once over before taking it to the mechanic and the upper unit was full of water, so I am having him replace the upper unit seals while he has it torn apart for the impeller job. I don't know if this is related to my overheating problem or not. I hope that fixes it, cause the only other thing it could be is the water circulating pump on the engine.

Well, just got back from my mechanic. The impeller was in real good shape, still had all the fins and was not tweeked in any way. The driveshafts were almost stripped, so I am going to need to replace both of them. The upper unit was full of water, so It's going to need resealed. As far as the overheating, my mechanic thinks that some exhaust gases were getting in. So, hopefully resealing it works. Drive shafts will be in on Friday, so I wouln't get it back til Next week.

Re: OMC Overheating issue...Help!!

Well, got a call from the mechanic today saying "your boats done but....". Great!!!...So we get to talking, he says I got the upper unit rebuilt with new impeller, new seals, new driveshafts and fired it up. Your gauge still says it's overheating, but I broke my temp gun out and it's only getting to about 150*, so there's got to be something wrong with your wire from the temp sending unit or your gauge. So, he says, i can monkey around with it. I said, "No, I will get it" (Especially at $100 an hour) so I go pick it up (And find out the meaning of BOAT "Break Out Another Thousand" Yeah, wasn't happy to see that) Grab another temp gauge from him and get to work. I unhook the old one and swap it with the new one and "TADA" it works fine. So, after doing the test on the Gauge according to manual, it says it was working fine, come to find out, it was not. Back in Business with a rebuild outdrive and new gauge......Hopefully that's it for the season as far as breaking down!!!
