hi anyone,
i have a 1978 omc 800 stern drive shift problem. the unit was not able to shift into reverse gear.
afetr isolating the problem to the lower gear unit, i have removed the stern drive and separated the upper and lower gear cases.
my problem is that the shift rod will not come out of the hole in the bottom of the case. i have removed the cylinder cap and cylinder sleeve. the piston is frozen on the rod and the rod will not pull out of the gear case. the manual is unclear as to how the rod comes out. is it screwed into the gear assembly?
the lower gear unit was replaced when i got the boat, so i am not positive it is a 1978 version. but it has a hydraulic assist piston attached to the shift rod. i ahve not disassembled the drive shaft gear assembly as yet.
any help or advice would be appreciated as i am a novice at this.
