I have an 87 bayliner capri br 1950 3.o omc with cobra outdrive. Well ive adjuxted the cables like you wouldnt beleive. So when i put it in foward gear it goes in and will go idle speed but if i give it any more throttle it jumps out of gear. So in the water i unhooked the shift cable from the assembly and pulled the black peice to lock it in gear and still at idle goes fine any gas to it and jumos out of gear making a tinktinktink noise or a rattle type noid so i beached it and being part stupid part safe i could feel through the bottom of the outdrive with trim up exhaust bellow off the fork where the cable meets so running put in foward it rattles but if i push up on the fork it drops right in and full rpm range. If i let go it drops out and does the rattle thing again??? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Re: Omc shifting problem

There are a number of things you need to look at.

have you replaced the lower shift cable? As these age, the housing separates where it enters the stern drive and flexes. Not only will it not hold adjustment well but it reduces the throw.

If you have replaced the cable did you set the bell crank per the instructions?

It is also very possible you are not getting full throw out of helm shifter. Is it the the original control? the ones that Bayliner came with in 87 were cr@p. I know because I owned one. There can also be a lot of "lost motion" in you cable from the helm to the engine. make sure the cable is not flopping around. Tie wrap it up to the electrical harness and the steering cable so it can't move an inch. If you do that you will be surprised how much that helps just itself.

Well that kinda seems to be what the problem is because before it just went to crap today i was always having to adjust the shift cable that goes from the assembly to the outdrive.
