I know this is a dated and exhausted subject, but, I do find the the service manual extremely confusing to say the least.
Here are some of my questions.(The shift cable has been installed on the lower shift converter (pulley set up) and I believe it is correct)
The manual states that the short cable length should be installed at 4 7/8" for the mechanical shift. Is that spec correct?
My short cable cannot go any shorter than 4 7/8", is that correct?
When I install the shift cable and converter on the lower unit what gear should the lower unit be in?
Once installed, what should be the length of the short (or long) cable for Forward, Neutral and Reverse gear positions?

Thank you.

if i'mreading my service manual correctly......gearcase would need to be in nuetral......not sure what manual you have, but after cable is installed, there is a measurement test that needs to be performed to ensure that cable is installed correctly......if your manual does'nt mention this, let me know and i will get you the info....and yes....the (short) cable should not be able to go shorter than 47/8".....if i read correctly

your right....i have read this procedure a few times and i'm still a little confused......i would,nt read to much into it....the worst that can happen is that you will need to repeat the installation if not correct...be sure to follow the measurement test before going any further with assembly.....i had one of my lowers rebuilt a few years ago by a "professional" and my shift cable is a tooth off...which make adjusting the esa and overstroke darn near impossible
