OMC stringer Temp sender location?

Ok I did a search and did not come up with the answer I wanted.

I have a 1976 omc 165 HO (straight 6 chevy) with a stringer outdrive (electric shift) My temp gauge does not seem to work. either that or its running WAY cold.

I would like to put an aftermarket gauge in to match the Tach and Fuel gauge i added. so my question is. where is the temp ending unit? I am new to boating so I am wondering if the temp sensor would be on the engine in a cooling jacket just like a car, or is it something that is in the outdrive?

Once I get that figured out, what temp should I be running at while cruising? and when do I worry my temp is to high? basically whats normal? whats not?

Ayuh,.. It's in the T-stat housing, just like any other motor....

Expect to see 140?/ 160?....

I didn't want to put it in the wrong place and burn it up because I am reading cold water coming in or something like that.

I have another question while I am asking things.

My sterndrive needs a few things. biggest is the intermediate housing (it damages where the worm gear is for the tilt)

I have the opportunity to buy a complete unit from a guy out of state. I saw pictures of it in the boat and everything I see looks exactly like mine. BUT he says the motor is a volvo V6.. that is really messing with my mind.

If it's a volvo should it not have a Volvo penta sterndrive? and should it not look way different than mine?

Is it possible the v6 is not really a Volvo (like mine is a chevy but says OMC on it) and it just Says Volvo on it?

By the way I went out and checked it out. there it is right side of the therm housing. kind of under the big water hose and some other wires...

I've seen a Geo Metro with HUMMER emblems on it

just look locally for parts where the seller has even the slightest clue what he is selling
You should get one identical to yours or you could end up with a bunch of useless iron (well, aluminum)

shop.evinrude.com has all the parts books online for your drive.

You can compare the intermediate part number and details to other models/other years.

There's a dozen intermediates you could buy that look the same but won't bolt up... One from a 1966-1972 OMC V6 is a good example of one that will be of no use to you because the OMC V6 in those years was a Buick

I've been looking local for a couple weeks NOTHING. I live in a LITTLE TINY HOLE IN THE WALL town..


Not saying you are wrong. I am just going by what I know (and thats cars not boats)

Wouldn't the difference be the bellhousing? and in that case couldn't I use my bell with the other intermediate?

Someone told me that there are two different Heights of intermediate housings... one is about 5" lower than the other...

If all this is true. I may be Screwed. The ID tag is missing on my sterndrive. so I have no way to ID it. the only thing I know is it SHOULD be a 990239
