omc stringer tilt issues

I have a 1985 omc 3.0 with a stringer outdrive and am having an issue with the tilt function. The outdrive will go up with no issues, but does not want to come down. The Tilt motor looked fairly new, so I suspected a solenoid problem. If I use a pair of jumper wires to reverse the power cables to the motor (i.e. pushing up on the switch should make it go down) the lower unit will lower fine. I don't have a manual yet, so I'm not sure how to diagnose which solenoid is bad. There are 2 solenoids under the exhaust manifold, the rear of which has no power going to the motor when the down switch is pushed. I do hear a faint clicking, however. I have already cleaned the connections, so I'm quite sure that is not the issue.
Also, I noticed that everyone speaks of the trim on this setup that raises and lowers the front of the engine. Mine does not seem to have this feature, rather it has trim tabs.... Did they do away with this or should my set up have it? Thanks in advance.

Trim: OMC sold models without the mechanical/hydraulic adjustable trim. The trim is fixed in those models.

I don't have an electrical diagram for your model. But, there are two solenoids in the tilt circuit.

I am having trouble with the same type of setup right now. I thought it was the solenoid so I took it to NAPA and they checked it for me. (Mine wasn't the problem so back to the drawing board for me). On mine the solenoid closer to the stern was the up one.

Thanks for the info, I'll see if I can isolate the problem to one relay or the other and go from there. On another note, where can I find a good manual for this beast? The one that came with the boat is a clymer and is missing about half of the pages due to a chipmunk.

Problem solved! It was indeed the forward solenoid that caused the problem. $18 on my Napa account and down it goes! Now I just need to make the boat run and I'll be golden.....
