Ok, so I took my stringer upper apart and put a new gasket and seal kit on. I was looking at the water pump housing. On the inside where the impeller is, it is pitted and not smooth. Don't get me wrong, it is not rotted out and on it last legs. If I choose to, I could sand it smooth with emery paper. But it would be a bit of a job by hand.

My question is, do I need to go through the effort? Does it need to be smooth? I am putting a new impeller in. Also I bought the impeller by itself, I did not know I should have got a new key as well. The old one appears to be in decent condition, could I reuse it?

Thanks.

If I recall, the impeller housing wasn't all that much extra. I'd replace it so you get proper cooling & water pressure.

When I did my impeller a couple of weeks ago.. I got a kit on ebay that happened to have a new pump housing cover and the price was really decent ..

This is the best picture of the housing I could get w/ my phone. What looks like buildup is dust from the emery paper.

Were you having overheating problems? while you have it down I would replace the swivel bearing seals, These can cause a big headach with overheating.

No overheating problems. The lower unit broke the verticle drive shaft. We just decided to check the rest of the port outdrive to be safe. The starboard was running fine, but kinda scared to start checking it out. LOL.

Kind of like replacing brake pads but leaving the scored rotors.
