OMC tank

I have had to clean the carb on my 78 15hp on the 3rd time now for various reasons so in trying to rule out all fuel supply problems I came across Craigs List, 2 OMC 3 gallon tanks. One was Plastic and one was steel. I primarily wanted the plastic tank and it turned out to be almost new condition. But the steel tank is really old. It's pretty rusty inside and it has a permanent attached fuel line. I seem to remember a post where someone said they'd pay for the shipping on one of these (was it BK?). Anyway, I thought I'd keep it as a back up as I have several motors. As for the rust I thought I would put a little gas in it along with 1/2 pound of roofing nails, wrap it real big in bubble wrap, and put it in the clothes dryer for about 1/2 hour. But the fuel hose, I don't like it. Can that be converted to quick dis-connect? The hose that is on it is very stiff and probably brittle. Was this factory? To update this do you take a $40 hose and snip the south end off then hose clamp it? Any input?

Ya it was me, don't know if shipping would be cheap, if it is i'll take it. Replace the tank if you think it's really causing the problem. Are you getting rust chunks out of the carb? I find it hard to believe that rust chunks could get in from the tank, the screen on the filter wouldn't allow it. Did you pull the screen and inspect?

Put fuel, and roofing nail's in tank. Wrap in bubble wrap, and place in clothe's dryer. Might as well leave, and run some errend's while this is going on. Wish I lived closer, thing's get so boring this time of the year.

So, if I see a mushroom cloud or some roofing fly my direction, I guess I'll know why. May want to send your neighbors on vacation before you do that, along with your family. Fuel tank with gas and roofing nails? In a clothes dryer? Not a nice combination.

I was focused on the tank issue and forgot to add:


Make sure you set the dryer to high heat, detonation will occur much quicker as opposed to low heat.

I hear they sell stuff to clean out motorcycle tanks that you dump in and shake around. Hopefully the non explosive kind!

I have tore down my carb 3 times. I had the motor running good 3 times, but the next day would not even start. Cleaned the bowl even with a dremel tool. Last time, after soaking in cleaner I noticed these tiny black lines in the bowl. I scratched at them and they came loose and smeared. That's when I replaced the fuel lines. The tank I was using was a Wal-mart plastic tank, probably 15 yr old. I use it every yr with my '73 9 1/2hp with no problems. But the fuel/oil mix has stained the inside black. I don't know, I just wanted to rule out any problems so I don't have to tear it apart again.
I thought you all would get a kick outta the dryer thing. There was a story in the local news a couple yr ago where a fellow tried to get the gas out of his car with a shop vac! He lived but with severe burns.
I am familiar with the tank lining stuff (POR-15). The kit is $50-60. It is most important on motor cycles because gas fumes will seep under the paint from the cap. Not important on a boat tank.
Anyway, no input on Quick Disconnect for my steel tank?

My main occupation for 32 years was full time firefighter. It's amasing what some people will try with gasoline. Sticking a gas can in a dryer is not out of the question. Some would just wonder why they did'nt think of the bubble wrap.

Is it possible the black lines in the carb are from gasket stamping and crumbs falling off the gasket?

Nothing wrong with trying to clean up and use the old can. There was a time for me when a weeks supply of formula for the babies was priority and buying a new can wasn't an option, ditch the clothesdryer idea, 5lbs of drywall screws and some vigorous shaking does work.

change the fuel lines to alcohol resistant lines. ethanol.

If the replacement fuel line is rather new, like not already 30 years old, it should be ethanol resistant.
When you do the carb rebuild and start it up and then it wont start the next day...............
will it start with magic indian firestarter **** ? aka starter fluid ?
If it does maybe the needle and/or carb float is sticking open a hair or the float is not letting the needle close 100% due to float adjustment or change in weight.

Those tiny black lines are the insides of the primer bulb.When you find a bulb that feels mushy it's time for a new one,I've cut several old ones open and there was loose rubber on the inside.
