I do get a kick out of this President. He is the master of the bait and switch.

We are going to the moon and mars, and we are going to spend the princely sum of 1 billion over 5 years to do it!

That ought to be enough!

Most estimates make the amount closer to a trillion dollars, but we don't have the economics experts that the administration has!

I agree with you (somewhat), Plywoody. Not that space exploration is not a noble endeavor, but is it necessary to our daily life at this particular juncture? Aren't there more pressing needs to address?

It is a more noble endeavor than buying votes through social programs that don't work. Don't you agree PW?

No question PW - This one is smoke and mirrors. He is not giving them real money to get it done. Just a new mission...

Re: On to the moon and mars!

I am much in favor of another Lunar landing. I worked on the Apollo Program in the 60's and I loved it.

The highlite of my several year endevor, was July 20, 1969, when the "occupied" Lunar Module landed on the Moon. This was an amazing feat by man, in such a short time frame, from startup to the landing.

As far as I remember, every part used on the entire system, was "Amarican made", by American workers!!!

It was very heartwarming to know I had a played a part in a major part of American history, by having some of my work actually land on the Moon and function properly.

Needless to say, security was very tight at the work locations. The security back then, makes the airport security now just average.

Needles to say, I am very pro space exploration.

"America, none just as good"

...Bob in Calif...

Re: On to the moon and mars!

Bush spoke of a Lunar Colony, has anyone heard of the UN treaty forbidding building anything on the moon? The US refused to sign it. What are we looking for? Minerals? Energy? Bin Laden??? Anyone aware that Congress recently passed a bill making all profits earned in space tax free? No kidding!

Space exploration sure stimulates the imagination but I get the feeling we taxpayers are funding more of the costs of techno development that the corporations are profiting from and ought to be paying for themselves.

The space program past, has been responsable for great leaps in medical science. Look at the "MRI" machine. That machine was developed thru space program science and has saved untold thousands of lives and detected hundreds of thousands of injuries. That's just for starters.

...Bob in Calif...

Absolutely. Lots of good thing have come from space exploration. No question about it.
I'd like to see them finish the space station and do the vast experiments they had planned for that. We are not doing much in that regard right now.
And I like to see them do it without someone trying to take some sort of political advantage over it.

Buying votes thru social programs that don't work? Are you referring to the recent prescription benefit for seniors? Yep, I agree with that. It is advertised to help seniors, when it really helps big pharma companies and HMO's. And it costs a fortune ($400 bill).

And it doesn't even kick in for a couple more years, luckily, as our budget deficits would not handle it.

PW, when you are alive (and destitute) only because of $12,000+ a year in prescribed drugs, you may be qualified to comment.

Meanwhile, you sound like a traitor to liberalism and an alien to conservatism.

Just because GW did it doesn't make it bad, dummy! Liberals have been screaming for this for 50 years, but you just can't stand that it was a Conservative that finally got off his butt and did Something about it.

You liberals whine and sniffle about all sorts of stuff, but you hate it when it is a conservative who shuts up and TAKES ACTION.

Re: On to the moon and mars!

Yep, that would be one of the democratic initiatives lifted for political gain by GW. I am far more comfortable with this program than the attempt by Hillary to hi-jack 20% of the GNP with no viable plan except to steal private industry and use class warfare to justify it. Really must upset the liberals to see their own game used against them. I know what their answer is-have the gov. take over and spend more money. That is how they measure social concern.

Wellfare, theres a winner! AFDC there is a well run organization, Medicare-please, Medicaid-ha, Social security- I've paid for 20 years and won't see a dime, Public Education, where are we 20th in the world?

Do you really think handing anything over to the government will improve it? Do you remember the former soviet union? I am sure this is the bench mark for all good liberals, but the track record isn't too good.

Re: On to the moon and mars!

I for one am VERY excited over the Mars and moon program. I'm glad to be alive when it comes to stuff like this!

I wish I could have seen the Apolo missions in person. What a time that must have been to see the nation honestly united.

I don't care what it costs to get to Mars. We HAVE to go. PERIOD. No question. So many good things can come from it.

I know I can't go, but I hope and pray at least one of my offspring will get to space.

H.

Re: On to the moon and mars!

wow
we can put people on mars by 2030 .
however we cant return them until 2065, budget deficit and all. actually I think space exploration with a porpose is very good. now thatwe donthave asoviet union tofunnel all our resorces to the development of weapons we need another engine todrive technology. some 85% of the technology we use today is less than 100 years old. when I was in school a 4 function calculator would not fit in the hip pocket and used a9 volt battery for power. my 15 year old scientific uses a hearing aid battery or solar and fits in any pocket I have. I was in the navy's advanced electronics field as a CIWS tech for almost 6 years. technology and the advances made since the 60's is awe inspiring and could not have been made without lots of wasted dollars along the way.
good luck keep posting and yall have a nyce day now ya heah
