Re: Once again, Chevy has a great deal -

"Dealer invoices" can be made to say anything they want them to say, and do not necessarily reflect what the dealer paid the factory, no matter what the salesman says.

Everything works on supply and demand, and the dealers know pretty much how many units of a particular model they have, or are available, and how long it is going to take them to sell them at a given markup. They will often deal on a difficult to sell model, and not deal on a popular one.

The tried and true best way is the old fashioned way--go to several dealers, tell them what you want, and at what price---even send some letters out to sales managers with the same info--and if they take it, fine, but if not, walk out. If several dealers allow you to walk out, chances are that if you want that vehicle, you are going to have to move your price up. Or change what you are looking for to one that is in greater supply and dealers are willing to deal more.

I have a friend that is a Ford dealer, and the factories do lots of strange things to them. A while back, he could sell as many Mustang convertibles as he could get his hands on, so the factory made him take two Taurus' (which was a dog) for every Mustang they would ship him. You can bet he was willing to deal on those Tauruses, but he was going to get every last nickel on that Mustang. And he could print you up a factory invoice to tell you anything you wanted to see.

Re: Once again, Chevy has a great deal -

interesting day ....

Terminator does her thing with the salesman that sold her car, and the sew sawing begins, but then things come to a stalling point, they wanted to hold it at 14800

which wouldnt work

turns out that "we arent comparing apples and apples"

Exit the terminator

Enter- The Destroyer

Now wait - these trucks ARE IDENTICAL! Whats this apples and apples crap??

well, this has a towing package and an appearance package

Neat! I dont see a hitch on the truck, whats going on with that? got the right truck?

Oh, well its not installed.

Good! Put it on a 2004 and erase from MY truck, now what else is keeping this truck from being a THOUSAND DOLLARS more?

Oh, well ... the appearance package ...

and Im thinking to myself, the other truck had the fancy wheels, shiny chrome trim on the grille - so im puzzling over this, and finally, what exactly IS the appearance package?

why, its that molding on the side of the truck

OH! That shiny strip? the shopping cart guard? well ok, how much is that?

295

WHAT! For a shiny strip of PLASTIC? jesus!

ok, so the truck has a hitch and a shiny hunk of plastic, hummmm, lemme see, 1100 dollar difference, and the SUGGESTED RETAIL on the plastic strip is 300 - wow, 800 for a hitch? come with a used boat or something? (other salesman trying not to crack up over that one) whats the hitch go for?

ummm, 150 ...

that better be a GOOD one, I can get a Reese for 79 bucks, but ok, so Im not so good at math as youse guys, but Im seeing 450 diff, not 1100

Well - thats because your truck over at Mall Chevy is old, it has a birthday next week ... ours is only september

This triggered the stuff I learned via lovely iboats this morning about dealerships, god I love this forum!!!

oh .. so cause mall chevy has been paying interest on that truck for a year, you cant bring down the difference

Err, no ... different birthday, different price

both 2003, they jack prices up for the 4000 dollar rebate?

Errr, no ...

So because your truck has been on the lot a little over a month, and accrued no interest on the money your company is out for the money loaned out for you to own the vehicle, THATS why its more money?
Does this have something to do with the hold back?

no no, its just that its newer ...

by NINE MONTHS! Well look, it comes down to this, every 2003 S 10 Ive looked at has been just like this one, no power windows, no power locks, no power seats, basic little truck, everyone wants doo dads and gizmos, which this little guy aint got
Fine by ME, I just want a truck, but I want a decent deal

four thousand off IS a good deal!

GM is providing that money, what are YOU gonna do for me? I know youve come down some, but mall is offering 13,700 (Im such a liar, they were crying their eyes out over 14,300, but all is fair, lol, besides, the salesman just sold a sixty year old bald guy a full boat Suburban AND a commemorative? collectors? edition CORVETTE  so he has HIS commission in for the day, lol) - so if they are offering 13,700, and your truck is the SAME cept for the hitch and the chrome strip, add those on and youve got 14,150, dont tell me they have you guys on that tight a string that you arent making something on it, and you stop losing interest on it to boot.

Otherwise, Ill go get my own hitch and have a molding put on for a hundred bucks, but I like the service you have given her car in your service department, its worth the fifty mile ride to me

Ah the power of pure logic, I had him, apples to apples, the field was leveled

As if I was tearing the food from his new borns babes mouth, well I suppose, well, let me go see ... he WAS the guy that the other guy was running to supposedly, but he went to someone too, and said well I guess your right, well we can do that then

Minus all incentives, the 20,583 dollar truck is now just over 11 grand

One thing I dont like ... last night when I fired the other truck up, I noticed the oil went to 80, cold oil, thicker

(an aside - I drove the nucar truck and was quite pleased, beauty-ful - came back, and the lot boy came and headed down to the prep bay, wooo hooo, cleaning my truck up already!

well no, that truck just got sold ... WHAT???
but they had a carbon copy TWIN, identical right to the penny, on the lot, which is the truck we are talking about right now)

This truck, when I went for the test ride, was idling at just below indicated 40-45 pounds and running down the road at 80 pounds of pressure, so now I want to go check ANOTHER s 10 and see if it does this fluctuation (which I realize is normal, but even on a NEW one? shouldnt it be high pressure even at idle when new?

That niggle aside, my stripper comes with tilt, cruise, blastingly cold AC, reclining seats and a radio that tells you what group is playing and compensates for road speed by automatically adjusting the volume

Ill crank my own windows!!!

:D :D :D

Castaway, Wasn't sure if I read it right or not but did you end up w/ the tow (package) or not. The tow package on the hevy's are more than just a hitch, they have receiver, the big female plug, and a little stiffer shocks, and a tow switch inside that changes the way it shifts (different RPM's). Its funny how you never get to see that one guy that makes all the decisions, its like the Wizard of Oz, "Don't look behind that curtain" Congrats, owned Chevy's all my life, she'll be good to you

Re: Once again, Chevy has a great deal -

This has been better than a rerun of Dallas. :D
Been waitin, all day to see how you'd come out. Congrats! It takes a lot of work and knowledge to get to the bottom line. As a previous poster said "they gotta make theirs too". Just that you don't want to contribute any more than they ablolutely need.

I did, however, seem to lose track of the $$$$'s in your deal;
"Minus all incentives, the 20,583 dollar truck is now just over 11 grand"

Where did the other 3k go. From 14,1k to 11k ?

Re: Once again, Chevy has a great deal -

GM card cashback incentives 2,200 bucks and 750 for the GM test drive incentive, for GM car owners, neat huh?

Naturally, I cant leave well enough alone - Ive been checking for a rear sway bar for the beastie, but not having too much luck, apparently they changed em in 2001

Oh .... so its more than just a hitch? Cause its NOT on the truck, but I did see an "increased capacity suspension" notice on the sticker ... you get all that for 150??? that really is a deal! Hmmmm, now I want to go down to delaware again and check out underneath and see if a big ol rubber plug is on there - but first, tyerlin - is that on the Big Boys or on my little ol S 10? (sheesh, as if my mind isnt spinning like a rat on a wheel as it is) where is that switch? I would leave it on Tow all the time, that usually means the shift valve cycles faster, less clutch slippage and longer life for the tranny

about the tranny - all automatics, yet some were "sealed" others had dipsticks - could that be a tip off to a towing tranny?

all that for 150? it doesnt seem possible!

if so, COOL!!!

it does have a 4.10 rear in it, towin the tin boat shouldnt be a problem

the SeaCraft now .... it would prolly break in half!

LOL

Castaway the my tow switch is on the gear lever, and it is a silverado. I have a overdrive transmission that is fully seviceable. While back (98) my wife had s-10 blazer and I could have sworn she had the same tow switch on hers, but not certain. She had a overdrive as well. I always like the tow package cause you get more than just a hitch. What motor did you end up with? I'm not quite sure from reading your post if that suckers sitting in your garage or not

Re: Once again, Chevy has a great deal -

After a few hours of tossing and turning, back again, lol

the motor is the four banger, hooked to the 1100 dollar  auto trans, its a baby Vortec

it seems to be quite a capable little motor tho, even with 9 miles it pulled strongly, and I was no where near floored, just gave it a little bit o' boot. I suspect its a bit weak kneed, cause that tranny loves to downshift. But under AC loading, popped on the cruise, and 75 was not a prob - of course, that lasted only 40 seconds or so, traffic was heavy due to the spectacular weather, upper seventies and cerulean blue sky

The neat thing is, ive been jumping into all sorts of vehicles over the last few months, burbs and silverados, and NO, clearly its not a Vortec 5700 mule under the hood, but the dash is strongly reminicent of its bigger brothers, the leather wrapped wheel feels exactly the same

When I told Liz I would take delivery in about two weeks, she groaned and said oh GOD ... there is going to be no living with you til its in the driveway

nah, not a big deal ... and here I am, four hours later, rambling on, cant sleep, guess she knows me better than I thought, lol

:D

Re: Once again, Chevy has a great deal -

Ray, that 4 banger should do the job for you. It is a good little engine. The oil pressure varience is pretty normal. The Computer may have the rpms all over the place because it is trying to get you the optimum fuel economy. That can be a bit difficult for it at idle.

As far as the AC putting load on the engine, that is one of those things that really used to be true, but with the efficient compressors they make now, it is almost negligible. In fact, most of the vehicles will get better fuel economy with the AC ON than with with it OFF and the windows down (more aerodynamic drag). And yes, for fuel economy they set the upper gearing so high that the tranny has to downshift a good bit (more often it is just the torque converter clutch kicking in and out). To remedy that, downshift manually, you can beat it to the punch and keep it there after you get familiar with the shift points of your truck.

Enjoy your truck - but shame you have to wait 2 weeks for it. Call them up and change the delivery date to the middle of this week - get it ASAP and start enjoying it!

Re: Once again, Chevy has a great deal -

Fear not boys, its all part of the master plan, lol

Frozen assets take a little time to thaw

Besides, I am under a horrific work load this week, and I have to get the chevy purged of all its crap, those big trunks hold a LOT, which will encompass next weekend

and frankly, I am so tempted to do something completely irrational (IE RUN FORREST RUN) that very long legged wheels would be a bad, bad idea

peak of foiliage ya see, could take a ride to Boston and take a ride with Ralph Spenser, nab a few stripers, then, oh, I dunno, head west to the green and white mountains and go south til I hit Flatheads neck of the woods, go splash a few lures, take pictures of the hawg, then wander down the I 79 corridor, blue ridge mountains to kentucky, bug SBN for a while, lol, and then my cousin down in Fla isnt so far away with his 200 horse Johnson powered Mako down in Port Charlotte (basstard is always going to have a bigger Big Johnson than me, lol  ) And on and on, lol, Snapperbait over in West Palm, with the cruise control keepin me good at 65, tickets wont be a problem (and Ill knock down 25 to the gallon!)

ah yes, that would be cool, rather than trying to learn the visual system, which includes the tectopulvinar system, the primary geniculostriate system, the particulars of retnotopic mapping, which cells are maximally responsive to what stimuli, differentiating between protonopia, dueteranopia and tritanopia, on and on and on, page after page after page, and thats just ONE class,

see? see?

RUN FORREST RUN!!!

(LOL, See? See? I didnt catch the irony til now!)

ah, but not me, too stupid to run, too stubborn to fail

but to have that dead reliable, bright red beastie out in the driveway practically SCREAMING at me to do the Forrest thing, well, Bad thing indeed!

truly, tis a better thing

Besides, gives me time to find that rear sway bar, I loved the way Big Green handled, and if a multi ton ford van can go around corners like a slot car, this aluminum wheeled little wonder can too!!!!
