One Way Prop

Just bought my first used boat and cleaned it all up. Ran it today in the driveway (hooked up the water) and found that the prop only turns when I go to reverse, and does not move at all in forward. The motor revs with the throttle movement, but no prop movement. This is a 1976 satrcraft with a 50hp chrysler outboard. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: One Way Prop

Before starting, look on the side of the engine where the control cables enter. The shift linkage is attached there. disconnect the cable and move it by hand. If it goes into both gears, then you need a clble adjustment. However: More than likely you will need to adjust the shift linkage. You will need to remove the rear shroud. There are six bolts holding it on. Under the shroud you will see a long hex coupler and a jam-nut. Loosen the jam nut and turn the hex coupler to lengthen the shift linkage as forward gear is down. Do this in small stages as a littl goes a long way. Go too far and you will lose reverse. Adjust until it goes solidly into both gears and neutral is free turning.
