Clymer refers to some tool for gripping the flywheel while trying to remove the flywheel nut, but I doubt I can locate one or justify the cost for one use even if I found it.

Tried rope around around flywheel tied to lifiting ring and, after telling my kid I'd probably break it when I leant on spanner, I broke it.

Solution. Remove two bolts from outer ring of flywheel and drill two holes through thick angle iron to fit bolts back through to holes. As I work single handed I used a short length and braced it against the starter pinion housing, but you could make it longer and have a mate hold the other end to avoid damaging anything.

Strong tug on the nut and off she came.

Hummm. All this time we just used a screwdriver between the starter teeth and flywheel teeth. Or an air wrench.

My mechanic suggested the screwdriver between the teeth too. But ther was no way I wanted to risk damaging the starter! Might not be easy thing for first timers. My flywheel has tapered holes in it. I took some measurements and put a couple of pins in an aluminum bar. I would have bought the strap wrench or the flywheel holder if it didn't need to be ordered.........

That works for taking it off. However, when you torque the nut back down, you need something to hold the flywheel. Using the impact wrench doesn't get it. It has to be properly torqued.

Everyone gets inventive in the absence of the proper tools.

How about removing a sparkplug, rotating close to TDC and inserting some good rope to jam the cylinder. When done carelly back off and remove rope.

Very bad idea, but certainly cheap.

I guess maybe it's true! "any tool is the right tool, if it's the only tool you got"
