Hello,
I have a 1989 Suzuki DT 200 that went down with the boat(no more low profile boats for me).
In 60ft of fresh water where it stayed for 2 days.
Took it to the local dealer the next day and they changed fluids, plugs, coils and cleaned out the carbs.
Now it runs and idles great on a flusher hose in the back yard I can even put it in foward and reverse.
Problem: when the boat is in the water it idles and when put in to gear it goes until you try to go faster than idle it boggs and chokes.
I have 100lbs in all six cylenders
I have spark on all six plugs
This is my first boat and i know nothing about outboard motors However, I have rebuilt carbs. on motorcycles and cars and it sounds like way too much air when motor is running/bogging.
any suggestions?
Thank you,
SK

sounds like you still have water in the fuel or the TVS is bad,
if the timing advances with throttle motion i would open up the fuel system, those carbs are very sensitive to debris and sometimes require dissasembly to flush.

I would agree that sounds like a fuel issue, unless you pulled the tank out of the boat and flushed it with gas and flushed all the lines and carbs its likely there is still water in there somewhere. Though if something came in to me doing that I would suspect a clogged up carb first. If that has float bowl drains try draining the bowls and get some foaming carb cleaner to spray in there then close it and let it sit and soak, then drain it out later. Also pull out the mixture screws (make sure you know where they are set to) and spray some in there too, sometimes thats enough to unclog a carb. Also once all the old stuff is out of the engine try another tank and lines, thatll eliminate waterlogged gas as a problem.

What work was done to get the boat running again since it sank? I didn't even know modern boats still sink, must have crappy foam.

And it sounds like a terribly interesting story as to how it sank and more importantly how you recovered it from 60 feet, please do tell.

If it runs in the yard, try running SeaFoam in the fuel (strong mixture). This may absorb any fuel in the carbs and also clean them up a little. Then try on the water testing. If that didn't solve the problem, carb rebuilds are probably necessary.

We were out in the lake and the motor would not go in to gear, 4-5 boats went flying by causing a series of large wakes and the boat filled up with water, the bilge pump could not keep up. About that time another boat tossed us a line and started pulling us to shore when his motor stalled and would not start 2-3 mins.later we were swimming. An all around bad scene being how we had my 6 yr old neice with us and I was recovering from a blown out knee.
Ever tried to swim with long pants, work boots and a knee that wont bend?
The lake is a state run facility that you have to pay to go on and they recovered the boat with air bags and put it on the trailer for no cost.

I will try the sea foam before i take the carbs. apart and clean them out.

SK

best to pull the main jets and flush like mad with carb cleaner, blow out all the fuel lines with fuel from a known clean tank. carbs are easy on that motor so its no worries. leave the seafoam on the shelf
then try running the engine from a seperate known clean tank.
did they clean and flush the oil tank and lines? if unknown at least drain the tank at the pump and run it with some premix. remember water sinks in oil or gas.
