Howdy, Shmiterude.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Give us the model number so we can determine the exact year.

You will need a Service Manual. After we get it identified you can Google up Ken Cook for a reprint of the original.

One of your magnetos is probably faulty. Most likely culprit is dirty points, but those engines are known to have coil failures, too.

Let us know the model number, and good luck. :)

It is most likely a cracked coil. Take off the flywheel and inspect the coil and clean/regap the points

I had this problem with my 1962 Sportwin 10hp. It was a failed condenser. Changed that, now sparks x2!!!

Fortunately, parts are cheap. Fact is you can replace the entire igntion system for around $60.
The service manual is good advice. It will save a lot of trouble later. But if you want to see what's involved check out Tom Travis' 5.5hp webpage:

That is $60 unless you purchase in our area, then read $260 for parts, special order, etc.. :)

Ah yes, Dryden. I was presuming this was from the US. Back when I was getting parts from the 'States, it ended up being around $100CAD all told if you used Fedex instead of UPS. Locally the coils go for around $20 online or about $45 each from the dealer. The points & condensors kit is around the same.
