I was thinkink that 75% of the folks in the restoration section ask on how to check for rot in the boats. Would it be a good ideal to post on how to do drill tests on deck, stringers and transom and maybe the mods will use it for a stickey?

Just a thought for you oops. Your directions really helped me thrue the process, I'm sure it would help others too.

Re: Oops

yeah.... i have typed out how to do core samples so much that my fingers hurt....lol.

ok....ill type out a full hull inspection how to ...then at least it will be in the archives, possibly it could be stickeyd to the information section at the top of the forum.

actually, a boat buyers full inspection list might help.

i have allways wanted to make a materials list as well.

Re: Oops

Can someone answer me this:

For every forum I'm on I find their is a general theme to extremism, GTO forum seems to pertain to suspensions "cant believe you still have a stock suspension" Auto detailing forum: people waxing/ polishing on a weekly basis and anything less is neglecting your car. Here: rot.

Maybe I need more of an education, but seems everyone here is paranoid about rot, and rightfully so being we are putting wood items on water. But I for one would not want someone doing a "core sample" on my boat I'm trying to sell. I have a solid deck but at near 15yo, I'm sure something is wet that shouldnt be but it floats. I cant see anything below the carpet and ski locker as it's a 19ft bowrider with limited options short of cutting it open. I can see the entire transome as the back assembly is simple and easy to access but any wood is well hidden behind some fiberglass.

I've been told about some "knock test" but am confused as I'm sure various stringers and accessories would throw off a sound and generally sides should sound the same unless involved in a collission.

In short, without going overboard, I too want to learn what is "reasonable" for inspecting a used boat? I can't afford what I want in new format, but for a 5-10yo boat I want some comfort. With briefing some of the restorations and stories here, one would think everything is in need of a set of stringers and a transom...

I've seen people around here replace floors, but nothing more. either their are alot of rotted boats floating around here or this is a regional thing for hotter climates.

In short, I'm interested in what some reasonable tests to verify the solid quality of a used boat are and where this goes.

Your deck will always be worse than you thought, generally speaking... But it is better to know.

Re: Oops

the reason people around here are worried about rot....is because the majority of boats in the restoration section...have been rescued out of a farmers feild...sitting under a tree uncovered for 10 years. rot is going to happen.......i would not call this extremism....however...if you go to a hospital..(and the dry dock is a hospital for boats)..your gonna find sick people.
and......as boat surgeons...we all know the symptoms.....i have a soft spot in the floor?....what are these cracks on the back of my boat?...why does my windsheild not align properly?

when i go look at a boat to buy......i allways have my drill and some 5200....if the owner lets me...i will drill....at least.... i will have a rubber hammer.
because i have hit so many boats with the hammer....i know the sound.

however.....if you do not know what to listen for...you are kind at a stand still unless you have a moisture metere with you (not the probe kind)
the best rule of thumb.....is....when in doubt....walk.

we all want to find the garage kept boat that has only been run 4 hours a season......but those boats cost money, and any diy. is trying to save money.
