Operating boat in gear

......so i am waiting for a new shift cable to arrive. then to hook up the shift interrupt switch and restore all to normal. during the trouble shoot i bypassed the 'no start in gear' and confirmed no other problems driving all over the lake at all speeds and stop/starting. in the meantime my ski friends want to keep on skiing. so.........we went skiiing. i ski in a large lake with a large lake front landing. i cranked in gear and when a skier went down and boarded from open water i turned off the motor at the switch, in gear. Then I started it in gear at idle throttle, gradually tightened the rope, waited for skier signal, and hit the throttle as usual. We had a good day skiing without incident and I just slow floated up to the trailer after cutting engine and trim up. We are thinking about going again this weekend. I am negotiating no canals and am using no neutral and no reverse. Here is my QUESTION: Am I hurting anything here? Can I harm the boat in any way starting in gear until my cable arrives? I keep the boat impeccably tuned and it fires right up in gear and slowly idles away from the dock. Is there a reason I shoud STOP this immediately other than the obvious safety switch I disabled? I can also flip a console mounted kill switch if needed. Thanks any and all for your comments!

Re: Operating boat in gear

Well....the safety issue is the big one here.....more than potential damage to the boat.......anytime you have to bypass a safety device it is not good.....am not a lawyer so I can't speak to what liabilities you open yourself up to....for years there were LOTS of outboards that had no neutral and they were start and GO motors there are probably still small motors being made that way today.....so operating without is nothing NEW....as far as HURTING the motor or boat....the way you describe your operation it doesn't seem to be damaging IMHO....but above all be careful....

I agree. I should have stated that I left the shift cutout switch in place in case some circumstance requires neutral. I am just avoiding neutral because the over-delay kills the motor and leaves the switch activated preventing restart. We have maybe a couple more ski week ends this season and using this old cable. I'll have the new part installed by next. Thanks for your sound advice!
