Opinion on Merc. Outdrive Repair Please!

I have a 79 I/O pre-alpha that has a newer lower unit. At the end of the season, I could hear a vibration sound that seemed to be from the bottom of the 5.0 engine that would disappear after warming up for 5 minutes. My mechanic says he traced the vibration to the upper case of the outdrive and that upon inspection, the bearings look blue with some wear on the teeth.

1. Has anybody heard of an upper unit vibration being heard in the engine compartment - does this seem likely?

2. He says $1500 to rebuild upper unit and then reseal the entire outdrive - ouch. Does this price sound competitive? He says the parts for the upper drive are $700 for Merc.

3. I am more inclinded to pick up a new Sterndrive SE106 with 3 year warrenty for $1200, or pick up a verifiably rebuilt or fresher used one on ebay for $600 to have a second and extra parts, etc. Maybe buy my own gears/bearings and have him install.

Please advise, as I really appreciate the expertise and have to decide in a few days.

If you're sure about it just being the upper, you could buy just the upper half from sei for $600....

Lots of folks on here have used the sei drives with good success, so have a couple I know locally. I'm running one of their lowers right now. Works great so far...

Hope this is helpful.

I second Tim here.....

no need to spend that kind of dough on an upper alone. You can get a complete rebuilt drive for that price. Call around. You might even try calling a merc dealer and ask how much a Merc rebuilt cost. Mercury remanufacturing has those in stock and carry a 1 year warranty. (better than the 30 the mech will give and 90 day a rebuilder will give.

I can see an upper unit vibration being heard in the engine compartment. It's attached to the back of the motor after all.
I'm third on the SEI drive. And just get the upper, if that's all you need.

SEI is a firm based in Florida that builds Alpha 1, Alpha Gen.IIs,+ now some Bravos out of Off-Shore parts.......
The Cases appear to be slightly Beefier,+ the Guts seems to be acceptable......

They offer a 3 Year, No Questions Asked warrenty...... Impact Damage included.....

Google SEI,+ you should find them......

Yeah their actual name is Sterndrive Engineering. They are in Clearwater, FL. The guy from there posts on Trailer Boats Magazines board from time to time. Mostly to answer people saying their drives are built in China, they are not, they are made in Clearwater, FL.

if it was a 5 year old boat i would rebuild the merc drive... but for a 30 year old boat... it's almost a no brainer.

If money is not too tight.....
I would go with a whole new SEI......
If the upper is on it's way out, the lower is most likely not too, too far behind.......
Sell your good lower on ebay to defray the cost or keep it as a spare....;)
