I have a 79 I/O pre-alpha that has a newer lower unit. At the end of the season, I could hear a vibration sound that seemed to be from the bottom of the 5.0 engine that would disappear after warming up for 5 minutes. My mechanic says he traced the vibration to the upper case of the outdrive and that upon inspection, the bearings look blue with some wear on the teeth.
1. Has anybody heard of an upper unit vibration being heard in the engine compartment - does this seem likely?
2. He says $1500 to rebuild upper unit and then reseal the entire outdrive - ouch. Does this price sound competitive? He says the parts for the upper drive are $700 for Merc.
3. I am more inclinded to pick up a new Sterndrive SE106 with 3 year warrenty for $1200, or pick up a verifiably rebuilt or fresher used one on ebay for $600 to have a second and extra parts, etc. Maybe buy my own gears/bearings and have him install.
Please advise, as I really appreciate the expertise and have to decide in a few days.
