A local guy is selling a 1997 Donzi 255 for 17.5K. The description is as follows. I have not seen the boat, but given that I am in Puerto Rico it has been used in salt water at all times and stored in a dry stack. I do not know anything about boats and I am looking for my first to enjoy overnight stays with my 2 children (9 and 6) and my wife. Any opinions on this?

A/C, Aft cabin for 4, GPS, Fish Finder, Depth Finder, Radio CD, sink, cooler, full bath, Maserator, Holding Tank, fresh water tank 35 gal., Microwave, Windlass, TRAILER, Mercruiser 5.7Lx , Bravo 3 Dual Prop. Max Speed 42 MPH

Have a survey done by someone you pick and trust. It will cost some but will either save you money or give you peace of mind. win/win

I did some searches on boattrader and noticed that this boat goes for a higher price than what this person is asking for. Deal seems like a good one... but I will definetly get it checked out then.

Be sure to get that survey by someone who knows what they are doing. There might be a good reason why the boat seems like a 'deal'.

full installed genset may be tough, but there are things you could do. if it doesn't already have it, you could install an onboard charger and/or shore power. you could also install a small inverter for pretty cheap, depending on what you want to do and power. throw an extra large deep cycle into the mix and you have some juice to power a coffee pot in the morning. you could go simple and just buy a small honda or yamaha generator. small, lightweight, quiet, and runs for about 8 hrs on a tank of gas. keep in topside and run your stuff.

Older Bravo 3's have bad problems with electrolysis. Check the outdrive's for any pitting as well as the whole gimbal assembly. Merc Claimed they improved the whole grounding system on bravo 3's as time went on.

The boat is a 96 or 97... would this issue apply to those years?

I wouldn't know specifics. I'm paraphrasing conversations with a mecahnic while inspecting a Donzi of similar time frame last season. It too had bad electrolysis damage.
