Hey guys.... Here's the deal... Wife agreed to let me spend $1200 on a new boat. But.... I'm staying with my Johnson 2hp. I don't plan on doing any open salt water but heading to some inlets and rivers is a possibility. What would you get with $1200 and a 2 stroke 2hp? I'm thinking a 15' xl kaboat or I still haven't ruled out those mini cats. Thanks guys!

Re: opinions please!

I'm just the new guy so my opinion really isn't worth much, but it sure is fun shopping for one!

Could get a medium size Saturn, Zoodic Zoom for that price, but a 2 HP engine will be a extreme poor performer, Just good on flat calm no wind waters for goofing around drinking cold beers along.

Happy Boating

lmao, i was watching the video boatstogo has of the guy on the 16" kaboot. He can't even get to the gear in the front of his boat. I would recommend hawking ebay and craigslist until you can run across a guy needing money and you can get yourself a nice inflatable with a 9.9 under 1k. Someone i know got his hands on an older hypalon boat with 1 pin hole in the keel for 200 bucks! good condition too.

Re: opinions please!

Where are you at in NC?

there is a listing in Jacksonville, NC for
an 11' 9" Newport
NEW 11 FT 9 IN INFLATABLE - CLOSE-OUT PRICE
I kind of smell scam though as the photo is not clear.
still for $680, if the boat is actually a Newport,
Newport Vessels - Best Inflatable Boats & SUP Stand Up Paddle Boards
and close to you, it may be worth it to check it out
(... but just look around on craigs, you will find a great deal very soon )

I suspect it is a JiLong, similar to the Red Star Marine
iBoats was liquidating last year. I have the aluminum floor
365 class of that SIB that I run an obsolete 1963 Evinrude 18 HP Fastwin on
where I was able to put the basic package together for under $1100.
( boat / tax / reg fees, motor, fuel line, fuel tank, transom launch wheels )
iBoats had them for $700 and I since one of my hobbies lately is futzing with
the smaller obsolete OMC twins, I can get a perfectly reliable motor together
for a couple - three hundred bucks ( including fuel line and tank ).

It will make 20 mph with 750 or 900 lbs total, including hull / motor / fuel
+ everything onboard ( passengers and gear ).
but the transom is not really suitable for an 18 HP outboard
so I my top priority project for the boat this season is to reinforce
the transom to the last floor panel, when that happens, I'll create
a thread for the topic.

The Jilong would be fine with anything 10 HP and under.
However,
I do not think that 2 HP is gonna cut it for you, unless you are trolling around on a
5 or 10 acre pond or something like that. Though it does not take much HP to make
displacement speed, any wind or currents could put you in a compromised situation
very quickly, very expectantly.

When I run a 1970 Johnson 4 HP SeaHorse with the weedless drive on the SIB,
honestly, it does not much more than give me a headache by the time I get anywhere
with that said, that 4 HP motor / 365 SIB combo will make 6.5 mph, just getting up on
plane if I move up by the front bench. ( I modified a piece of PVC pipe to make the tiller
extension ). If I am going down wind I may pick up 1/2 to 1 mph. If I am headed into the
wind, it may not be possible to get much beyond the "displacement mode hull speed" of the
SIB, much less on plane.

a Square Stern Canoe may be something for you to consider with that 2 HP motor.
for added stability, and you can always come up with an arrangement to outrigger a canoe
with a large diameter PVC pipe
( i.e. another thread topic coming over the horizon, but somewhere other than the inflatables section on iBoats forums )
( ...I would like to get a Square Stern Canoe to run with that little 4 HP Johnson on,
though 2 HP is probably more than needed )

Re: opinions please!

We ran a 16 ft Aluminum square stern canoe with both the 2 and 4 HP motors at different times for many years. If you stay out of big water, that makes a very nice rig and the small motors do a fine job. Throw it on top of the car and hit the road with little fuss and muss. It is good for duck hunting as well as fishing and there is no tube to puncture or time wasted inflating a boat. Much easier to use than an inflatable and a head and shoulders better than a cheap inflatable. Ours is a 1972 model and it is as serviceable today as it was when new.

Inflatables are very nice, but the name of the game is to get out on the water and enjoy yourself. There is a reason canoes are so popular.

Re: opinions please!

MrDRH: I got to see a kaboat for the first time maybe 2 weeks ago, and I have to say, though the material and construction seemed decent, I wasn't impressed. There's not much to them. The seats are wood benches across the tubes, with no back rest, and they are extremely narrow. If you set up a small work area in front of you for fishing, the rest of the boat is off limits unless you want to remove it to get up there. The fact that this was my friend's 3rd or 4th use of the boat and when lifting the motor to beach it, he fell out, didn't help. It may have been my imagination but I think he kept eyeing mine and wondering who got the better value. Granted mine has significant mods, but they'd not even really be an option for his boat. The only real plus I saw was that the motor mount was part of the boat i.e. it could handle a significant motor and power, which isn't of interest to you. Side by side, I wouldn't have traded my M4 with no mods, for his kaboat. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck.
