Re: Oregon joining US

BTW, any view of Oregon has to include the Lewis and Clark expedition. Ken Burns had a fabulous made for PBS movie on the expedition.

Back in the days when the Columbia river was a free flowing river, and not the series of lakes it is today!

A tidbit of information. the Grand Coulee Dam when built was not equiped with any fish passage, and cut off fully 1/2 of the total salmon spawning habitat all by itself.

Bassy, I look at it like this, 1 door closes so the next one can open up. I'm a contractor in Ca. and I have to find a new job about every month or so. Keeps me on my toes. BTW where is the original Squaw Valley?

Re: Oregon joining US

Take the conservative approach, and whack it down till there is nothing left to whack down, and see where that gets you. Bad policy takes decades and decades to repair, and meanwhile the entire environment suffers, including the water you drink.
Sorry PW, That is not the conservative approach. Taking more than can be replaced is a liberal approach. Read Webster..it will bug you a bit maybe.
:p
PS. what did you do with Ralph Spencer? :(

tylerin,
The original Squaw Valley is in the foothills east of Fresno; about an hour away from Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Forest.

Bassy, Is that anywhere near Pine Flat Lake? I had a houseboat, there, from '77 to '88. Broke my heart to dump it when I moved up here to the PNW.

***********ALERT**************
Plywoody has finally revealed his location. He's on our home turf now. Don't have to fear that we are offending our good neighbors to the north when we jump on him now. :p

Do a little research on my neck of the woods...
Southern Oregon.

There is some interesting things around me that is little known.
And even more interesting is some of the old laws that are STILL on the books. (Won't mention them, cause they are racist by today's standards)

If I get some time, I'll dig up some stuff on my area's history.

One of the biggest would be Camp White (now called White City). It was a military facility that held Japanese POW's during WWII.

As a kid, I use to 'play war' in the cement pill boxes that are still here. They worked real good for sniping unsuspecting digger-squirrels too!

Camp White

H.

Re: Oregon joining US

For some real info about Oregon (other than your a tree hugging liberal or a banjo picker that sleeps with his sister if you've been here very long):

Many folks who settle here were headed for the gold fields of California, however there were many who traveled the Oregon Trail (Independace, Missouri to Independance, Oregon - or depending which chamber of commerce you believe, Oregon City)- and they were specifically headed for the very fertile and heavily forested Willamette Valley.
Main features:
a long beautiful coastline.... once rich with fishing.

Between the coast and the valley lies the Coast Range and much of the finer timber that is subject to controversy- environmentalism vs. jobs and development. Oregon has a real tough time with balancing the two.

the Willamette Valley (which you're almost guaranteed to mispronounce) where they can grow just about anything but pineapple and citrus.

the Columbia River and the scenic Columbia River Gorge (way overrated) but the whole river corridor is a natural gem

The state is divided roughly (geographically and culturally) in two by the Cascade Mountains, which features great scenery and skiing for those that care to indulge.

East of the Cascades is another world... much more desert like, prototypical cowboy and indian country. Picture Wyoming, Idaho-- that's what eastern Oregon is like. Wide open, arid, desolate at times, often very beautiful.

Southwest Oregon is forested and hilly, very much like northern California. Southeast Oregon is dry and rocky, much like Nevada.

A)Plywoody is talking sense

B)Plywoody is not from Oregon

C)See my post above- Oregonians can't be trusted to get anything right. If your for logging, slash and leave a mess even the deer can't get through.
If your against logging, make an *** of yourself and then get no sympathy when the redneck loggers cut the tree out from under you. OR- revert to "environmental terrorism" -burning up trucks, equipment and research labs. They really pull a lot of support that way- NOT!!!

And as for fishery science, if these yokalls fish like they log, I'm sure the biologists are right. I've seen fisheries depeleted elsewhere, Oregon wouldn't be any differant.

Re: Oregon joining US

For your information, I have worked a long time in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, and now I work in Northern Michigan and Ontario, Canada. Whether you like it or not, I do know of what I speak.
And I am in no way a radical environmentalist.
And while it may feel good to blame some group for all your troubles, you need to get your informtion from more than just that noted natural scientist Lars Larsen.

FWIW you can check out www.algomaforest.com for some real environmental science information and work being done in Northern Ontario.

First the Spotted Owl thing(OUTRIGHT LIE), Now its the Salmon and Bottom fishing! (UNSUBSTANTIATED SCIENCE)! It wouldnt be a bad thing if it would have been true!!

When the spotted owl thing came up, there was a big write up in Look Magazine with many pictures taken from an airplane at about 8-10,000 feet! It showed parts of oregon that had been clearcut. (The only efficient way because of the terrain), The problem was that you couldnt see the little trees that had been re planted and were growing in the place of the logged timber! There is just so many lies assotiated with it all and who is to know any different than what they read?? Trees are americas renuable resource and no different than any other crop other than it takes longer to grow!! We log and fish in Oregon. thats what we do, leave us alone and let us do it! We have judges in California telling us what to do!! Whats wrong with that picture??

Personnaly I cant say it effected me other than just living in the community other than salmon fishing, I have quite fighting it and quit!

LubeDude
Ld, I wonder what the natives said when the white guys got to Oregon? You are not the first ones to disaprove of the invaders. ;)

Every country in the world has been taken over by other countries over the years!

So whats your point, you want to give all of it back to the indians so they can build casinos all over the state. They have allready taken over more land than I hate to admit and taken it off the tax rolls. Dont get me started about the Indians too!!!!
