Got the report back from the surveyor and he says we can keep her. :D 1989 Carver Santego 30. Twin 5.7L Alphas.

Right now she's being shrink wrapped. New mooring cover is part of the deal. My question is, for a boat this size where there is no trailer how do you do your own work on her? She's structurally sound but cosmetically in need of a facelift.

Ayuh,.... Cool Battlewagon,....

To answer yer question, ya either buy, borrow or rent a Huge wagon for it, or have yer Marina travel lift it out, 'n onto blockin',...

Dry dock at the marina where you keep her would be my best guess, that's how I did most of my maintenance, polishing, cleaning and such. Usually this is done as it's pulled for the season, before wrapping and tucking her in for winter sleep, you're gonna need a ladder for that beast!!. That's a very nice boat you have there, what waters will she be floating on Erie?

Nice looking oldy but goody. I always did my bottom paint, wax/buff and pre spring launch stuff in the storage facility before spring launch.
One reason we always stored indoors heated, was so I could work on it during the winter and was not hampered by weather conditions.

Mostly around the islands. We had a smaller boat and a mobile home but the lake didn't cooperate this year. 4 and 5 footers in a 23' boat make the wife nervous. We wanted something big enough to handle most of what Erie can do and be able to stay weekends. Anyways, I'm thinking this season she might not look her best below the rub rail.

Slip Away, indoor heated gave you enough room to work?

Nice looking for an '89. I was a plant manager for Carver in that era, might have even touched that boat a time or two.

Yes, there was enough room to do what I needed. It's tight at some facilities, but had enough room to get a ladder in there and
get things done.

nice boat... I LOVE Carvers.... as for working on it, if you have enough truck to haul it, I'd look to pick up a trailer....

with the inboards, guide on's and an electric winch are just about mandatory if you want to use a ramp tho

Don't want to get into the trailer with the shafts n struts

On paper, or after a couple of beers, a trailer sounds like a good idea. Having owned two cruisers (28ft and 31ft) without a trailer, skip the trailer
idea. Spend the $4K on a good storage facility that allows you to work on boats during lay up, and on boat gas during the season.

If you have a place to store it, local haulout and transport won't break the bank. Any local marina owner can set you up or recommend a haul-out service. My friend just had his 30' Chris Craft flybridge hauled out at a local boat ramp, transported 10 miles to his winter storage 'lot', and blocked for under $300. You'll have buy lumber and cement blocks. The transporter will tell you exactly what you need based on the size of the boat. I did it when I bought my 21' Pro-Line and didn't have a trailer yet. It was painless. These guys are pros.

Nice boat. I sometimes hate Carver. I'm convinced that they have an all-female design team that manages everything inside the hull. You DO NOT take the admiral to see a Carver unless you're pretty sure it's the boat you want to buy. Trust me.

to each their own.... storage for the entire time I've owned my cruiser has cost me exactly nothing and pulling n launching has only cost me the price of fuel to drive to the ramp
haven't had a beer in 20 years :D

At todays LOW prices consider buying an indoor dry slip. Nothing but HOA fees after that. Slip the dock girl a couple bucks when she comes down to tie the boat off and you have a friend for life. It is the only way to go! No bottom paint. Exterior rinsed and motor flushed after every use by the dock girl. On a maintenance rack when you want to do anything. Call and have her gassed and on the water when you want to go out.

Rare to find a rack storage facility that will fit a 30ft. cruiser with high freeboard and flybridge in Ohio. Never heard of in and out service for a flybridge,30+foot boat around here. Good luck with that.

Funny you should say that. We looked at a lot of aft cabin models and she wasn't impressed. As soon as she saw the Carver it was over.

One of our USPS friends bought a 1990's 32 Mariner a couple years ago and a bunch of us took a tour. As usual with Carvers, I was impressed with the cabin layout, large head area, drawers and cabinets everywhere. Everything is real handy to use. Nice access to everything and great use of fabrics and colors.

One of the wives (34' Silverton owner) said, 'This boat was designed by a woman.' I've seen several different models now and I believe it.

I currently have an offer in on a 1992 26' Command Bridge. Step inside and you'd swear you were on a 30'. How they managed to make so much room in the same footprint (9.5 beam) as my boat is beyond me. My Four Winns feels like a bare-bones walkaround cuddy in comparison.
