I have a 70's model 165HP mercruiser outdrive coupled to a GM 250CID 6L that will not trim up. It has the 3 button control configuration with an "Up", "up/Out", "in" buttons. The outdrive goes down fine and when the "up" and "up/out" buttons are pushed it goes up fine. It just doesn't "trim" up slowly by pushing the "up" button by itself. I looked in my repair manual but troubleshooting this problem is not listed. Anyone have any suggestions of where to start looking for the problem?

Thanks,
Kurt

Re: Out drive will not trim up

hey there good morning-
I have to deal with the same problem in the coming days as our starboard leg is being a pain in the butt! It will go up and down but it is intermittent on the throttle switch, usually we depend on the trailering switch to lift the leg but that has started to fail, I am under the impression we have a bad connection (high resistance) as you use the switch or switches, it heats up the splice or the contact point and they expand so you have a bad connection! dirty, corroded, loose? have some one engage the toggle while you move around the wires you may be lucky, and find the bad spot right off
clean all splice points and soddier if possible.

Ayuh,... Odds are the Trim Limit Switch mounted on the drive is Trashed, or it's wiring is...

I have the same button config and mine is the same way, it will only go up when the 2 buttons are pressed.

one other thing that I have noticed is that both the trim gauges (port and starboard) are also intermittent, so I think the first place I will look is were these wires come together? only makes sense if there is a common problem or fault.
yesterday or the day before one of the iboaters put together a good checklist for this problem, I will have to dig back and find it.

Re: Out drive will not trim up

When it only comes up with the trailer button then it is usually the Trim Limit Switch. This is the one mounted on the port side of the gimble ring.It is held on with 2 screws in slots.Loosen the screws and turn it back and forth in the slots as someone pushes the up button. It may start working then.If so set it to stop when the drive is about to come out of the guides at the bottom of the gimble ring.If it don't work take it apart and clean and sand the contacts inside the switch.Try again.
