Re: Boatt

Where is the cavitation plate? it looks like the motor is way too low, it should be even with the keel. Perhaps it could be raised, but it looks pretty bad to me.

Also, usually a splashwell is separated from the rest of the hull and drains overboard (its supposed to get splashed into).

Re: Boatt

No easy fix but I would try raising the engine as far as you can and give it a try. There are quite a few I/O conversion threads here - - many of which did not work out.

Re: Boatt

If that was an I/O then the WORST problem you have is one you haven't even considered/mentioned..... that transom was not designed to support the torque applied to it by an outboard.... You may well be running around in a timebomb..... IF that transom busts on you, the bad things that COULD follow are really scary.

My vote is start shopping craigslist for a smokin deal on a hull and put your motor on it...

That's what wasn't making sense! I didn't think the Lancer was ever made O/B (might be wrong). Sorry ringo, I think the guys are right - that one might be a disaster lookin' for a place to happen. Hope you can transition over to something else easily.

don't give up... there are hulls out there.... just the other day I found a solid 20'wellcraft center console for free on craigslist..... You already have the motor and the trailer... the hull is the easy part

Listen to smokeonthewater (the forum post, not the song :D)...

Chris Craft is a boat people like to restore. If you want to recover this stuff, and are willing to work at it a little pull the outboard and controls and look for something to put it on. A boat without a motor is CHEAP and the outboard you have is supposed to be a pretty good one.

Then take a few parts from that Lancer, polish 'em up and post them on ebay. You might make a decent bit parting that thing out. I got rid of an old outboard last year for parts and had someone drive over 8 hours to buy a $100 parts motor. You never know how easily you can pull some value back out of something. if it works, pull some more and see how many you can make move.

The last option you have (and it's one I couldn't pull off) read some of the restoration threads and see if you want to rebuild the back end of that thing. A Lancer is a pretty boat if you want to work at it.

Re: Boatt

In addition to the obvious risk of sinking, I think your motor is at risk of drowning, sitting that low. Your PTT is submerged. You need to remove that motor.

IF you want to keep the hull, do not try to patch anything in. You need a total transom rebuild, done right.

But consider this: the previous owner clearly did not know what he was doing, nor did he appreciate risk. No telling what other problems you inherited. For example, you mentioned "no foam." We're not getting very far toward the bow, having now encountered two major problems.

This is so true! Down here in the land of sunshine, ocean and paradise there are all kinds of cheap hulls in good shape and the prices aren't too bad and sometimes free. You know, it's the darnedest thing...you can take a motor off a boat and the boat is worth nothing...put some junky motor on it and the price jumps. Go figure.

At the moment I have a boat that I would have a hard time selling at $1000 but if I advertised just the motor for a grand someone would jump on it. Then again, I had a 12 footer with a 9.9 on it and asking $1400. The guy comes over and says, "I don't need the motor, but I will pay you the $1400 for just the boat."

Huh?

Re: Boatt

I'd assume that where the motor is mounted now is solid. Why not mount a jack plate through those holes. Hopeully you could set it up high enough to get the cavitation plate where it belongs in relation to the keel. Then it's just a matter of glassing over as much of the transom as possible while allowing the motor to tilt properly.

The motor is mounted to a poorly cobbled conversion on an I/O hull..... It can not be deemed to be safe..... Also his transom is at the water level..... To "fix" this he needs to address three problems.... the splashwell needs to be reworked to RELIABLY keep water out.... Transom needs to be evaluated and rebuilt such as to safely handle the forces applied to it that it was not designed for..... the powerhead needs to be raised higher above the water level..... this MAY add a new problem if it is not long enough to get the antivent plate at or near the bottom of the keel....

Re: Boatt

If this was a I/o conversion, chances are who ever did it, didn't do it right. From what I can tell on the pics, the transom opening is way to low. The previous owner I have a feeling didn't know what he was doing. He possible made it to fit the shaft length of a motor he already had instead of building the boat properly and buying a longer shaft motor.

To fix this, you would have to either close the transom off and bracket the motor. Or built the transom up and get a longer shaft motor. Neither one of these options is going to be cheap. Like already asked, where is the ventilation plate in regards to the bottom of the boat? This will be the tell all!

Your other option like already mentioned is find another hull. But you could also turn this back into a I/O if you wanted to with the money you get for your outboard.
