I have a duck rig with a 50 hp Johnson on it. After a hunt I always leave it down to drain any water out between hunts. I notice some oil running out of the bottom the other day. Not mutch but enough to concern me. Looks to be runninfrom between the propellar and lower unit and running down botttom fin. Anyone have any idea what may be wrong and should I worry?

Re: Outboard leaking oil

do you live in a place that has winter freezing temperatures. If so, then you must be very concerned. If you have water in your lower unit, and it freezes, you will crack the lower unit and it will need replacement. That is not cheap, and so I would make sure that there is no water in your lower unit.

To check the lower unit, remove the upper and/or lower oil screw and check the oil. If it is white, or creamy....then you have water in the lower unit oil. If it is not a creamy whitish color then your lower unit is fine.

Thanksfor that quick response, after i posted i foundsome info in another thread explaining the unburned 2 cycle oil. It looks more like oil and not lower unit grease. Black and oily, but I will be checking lower unit for water to be sure.

If your lower unit oil looks good and not like coffee with a bunch of cream and sugar when you pull the oil drain plug, you're probably right and it's unburnt fuel and stuff. I like to take my prop off every so often and check for fishing line and to lube the splines. Sometimes the fishing line will cut the prop shaft seal.
