It looks like i might of found a larger motor for my skiff.. What will I be getting myself into with swaping out my 2001 johnson 50hp to a 2001 mercury 75hp? Is there a plug i can buy to make the wire harness work? Will the controls on my skiff be ok where they are? I never swaped a motor on a boat..Any advise would be helpful!!

thanks

More than likely you will have to change the control box. You will need the wire harness for the motor that you are installing. Check bolt pattern for transom, probably have to drill some extra holes. Don't fix it if it ain't broken! Do you feel like you need more power? I personally would choose Evinrude/Johnson over Mercury 100X over, but everyone has their preferences. Parts seem easier to find, and I just feel like Evi/Johnson's are more reliable......

Do you think the skiff will handle almost 100 lbs more motor on the stern and maybe an extra gas tank ? I agree with Pete .. Some times it is not worth the headaches for an extra 10 kts. on the water !!

Re: Outboard motor swap advise!!

The boat is a 2002 carolina skiff semi V..The max is 75hp..The 50 hp i have on there now is a dog when i have three guys on there fishing..It will not get on plane at all!!! Im sure the 75hp will get her on plane easy!! I have tried just about everything..Foil, and just put smart tabs on last week..I have been looking for a used 75hp for some time!! Long as everything checks out ok on it i think its a no brainer!!

It comes with all the controls and harness..I hope that the controls dont have to swapped also..

Controls wont be hard to run though, no biggie there. Hmmm, I know you hate to hear it, but the seloc manuals do a superb job of the wiring of these motors. Id fill you in if I had the right manual, but I am an old motor guy. I dont think that I own one motor that is not older than me,and I am 27!! Shoot my main motor is 45 years old!
