Hi Guys,

I believe I've found the right place to post this! I recently purchased a little 12 foot aluminum and old Johnson 9.5 hp outboard ('64-73, I believe.) The motor appears to be in decent clean shape but the previous owner informed me that it has not been run in about 5 years. I am leery of dropping it into a lake and running it without doing some kind of carb cleanup or other maintenance. I have read I should replace the water impeller right away and run some other tests. Unfortunately, I have ZERO experience with this stuff but am eager to learn and excited to have a new project.

Of course, I really do want to get it on the water before it freezes! If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated. Does anyone know a good source for outboard parts (water impeller/pump kits, carb kits) and/or service in Calgary? or even online d-i-y stuff?

Also, I took a quick look and can't seem to find the model/serial number nameplate. Where can this be found?

Oh! And does anyone have any plans for building a workstand for it out of 2x4's? Sorry for the mess of questions but I am a true eager "noob!"

Thanks all,

Re: Outboard Newbie! Johnson 9.5hp

There are several good sources for parts but, I always try here at Iboats first. If there is an aluminum tag on the transon mount, there will be a model number on it that will tell us the year of the motor. If you can't find the tag, look at the freeze plug on the motor itself, that will have the model number as well. Once you get the number, post it back here and we can find the year for you. In the mean time, read the "Top Secret file" at the top of this page. Lots of quality info there about getting an old motor going again. Happy posting!

Thanks a lot. I'll have to take a closer look (find out what/where the freeze plug is) and get back here.

Looking forward to this project. Lots of great info here. I just need to start digging in and get familiar with my engine and some of the terminology.

Cheers,

For the stand, I took 2 work bench like these one and grip a 2x4 on the table top adjustable vise. I keep about 8 inch between the two benches to grip the motor. It is high enough to put the feet in a 5 gallons drum full of water.

Canadian Tire workbench

You have a Canadian Tire in Calgary. Watch the flyer, these workbench are often sold at 10$. It is enough stable the crank and run the motor for maintenance and test. As these workbench are foldable, when you have finish your job, you could store everything.

You will have to get the carburetor kit from a BRP/Evinrude authorized dealer; part number 0382048. There are two different seal kits for the gearcases, depending on the year, so check that.

You should change the gear oil (high viscosity 75-90 or BRP Hi Vis).

Be sure to use 87 or 89 US octane gasoline mixed 50:1 with TC-W3 oil.

Plugs are Champion J4C or you can use J6C if the compression is low or you troll a lot.

Drain the carburetor float bowl before you run the engine.

There's a littler premliminary information here: http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/OMC_9.5.htm

There should be a nickel sized aluminum welch plug on your engine block with the model number.

In case you haven't got a dealer nearby, I've been working on an Evinrude and have had good success with getting parts & advice from Lordship Marine here in Vancouver.

Wow, an almost all Canadian thread! Try www.marinemanifold.com They are a mail order place out of Vancouver. Good cheap parts. No duty or cross border worries. If in the US though I would use iBoats.

Thanks a lot. That will help as I can't find a dealer here for johnson/evinrude.

Guys, for the life of me I can't find the model number. The plate on the transom mount is gone and I don't know where to look for The freeze plug. I'm standing over this thing with a flashlight but can't see anything. Do I actually need to pull the motor to access it? Is it on the left, right, front, back? Any help would be appreciated!

An old 9.5 was my first motor, found it in one of my friends barns and he said I could have it. A new fuel pump, carb rebuild, and water pump impeller and she was ready to go. It pushes me and my 14' flat bottom 17 mph on smooth lakes. Needless to say i really like those old johnsons. Hope you have as much luck with yours as I did.

Hmm. Well, that didn't appear to work.

Anyways, I managed to fire it up last night for a split second using new gas, oil, and stabilizer. I popped it into gear and water flew everywhere inside the garage. Pretty funny, rookie mistake. I had it running in a large plastic tub. Looks like just a bucket might be a better option. As well as doing this outside.

After I moved it I could not get it to fire up again. The one thing I notice is that the primer bulb does not stay hard. The hose looks brand new but the tanks is an old one. It looks like it's in good shape, no rust or anything, just a couple dents. I put my ear to it and it seems to be hissing a bit (i.e. letting air in) near a dented handle. Is this be a problem? It's supposed to be vented anyway, right? It actually seems like it's not venting which might explain the primer bulb not working properly.

To make a long story short, it seems to be not getting fuel and I don't know why or what to do. I don't really want to go buy a new tank. It came with three and they all seem to be in great shape except the dented one I used (the others have old gas in them.)

Fun stuff.

Re: Outboard Newbie! Johnson 9.5hp

It looks like your motor is a 1968, but don't quote me on that.

The primer bulb on the fuel line should not be hard all the time. After you prime the engine (bulb is hard) and you pull the cord to start, the engine is sucking the fuel. Therefore the bulb should not stay hard while running or attempting to start.

The tank you are using has a hole in it, so i would use one of the other tanks but that shouldn't affect if the motor will start or not. I have an old tank with a couple of holes in it and I can hook it up to the motor and it will start and run.

Give the carburator a good cleaning and then see what happens.
Good luck

Re: Outboard Newbie! Johnson 9.5hp

Oh man. The fun continues! Did a couple hours work on it tonight. Changed the gear oil and opened up the carb to clean it out. It actually looked pretty clean inside and I now remember the guy I bought it off saying he had recently opened it up and cleaned out any gunk. No gunk whatsoever can be seen at least in the top part. I had removed the top four screws and pulled it apart. I gave everything I could reach a spray of carb cleaner and a wipe.

Once I put it back together I was able to pull start it and it would run as long as I had the throttle on high and sprayed the cleaner in. I went ahead and ran it over and over like this until I had sprayed the entire can in.

It only runs for a couple or few seconds otherwise and the primer ball still does not get very hard. Maybe my next step should be to clean out the fuel lines and maybe the fuel filter. Can I clean the filter? Or does it need to be replaced?

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

I'm having fun anyways and learning a lot. This is really my first foray into any kind of engine work.

Thanks,

Re: Outboard Newbie! Johnson 9.5hp

The high speed jet is the most commonly clogged part and is easily fouled because of the location.

When you service the carburetor you will have to remove the whole carburetor to get to the high speed jet because it is in the bottom of the float bowl, behind the drain plug. Use new gaskets whenever possible.

Also, be sure to replace the float valve and needle with the updated parts, and attach the clip between the needle and float valve arm.

You may also need to clean the screen in the fuel pump, and make sure that the gasket between the fuel pump and the engine is airtight.

Hey buddy,

Please, please don't use carb cleaner to start or maintain a running condition of the motor. The carb cleaner does not have lubrication. Could cause damage to your motor.

Better to use a spray bottle with premix 50:1 fuel/oil ratio just like in your fuel tank.

Better to get a carb kit and clean it like the member ezeke suggested. It is the only way to insure proper cleaning of the carb.

Please do yourself a favor, get a service manual for your motor. It will provide a great deal of help. It has step by step instructions, pictures, and specifications for your motor. The motor you have can be a difficult to work on for certain types of repair.

This guy on ebay has a cd copy of a 1972 Evinrude/Johnson Service Manual cost about $12 with shipping. (99.5% same as your model and all repair application and procedures apply). The actual hard copies run about $35 to $45

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/9-5-...60675599237QQptZMotorsQ5fManualsQ5fLiterature

Good luck......Ezeke will steer you right, he is very knowledge about your motor.

Yeah I learned this AFTER I had already done it. A little over-eager I guess. Plus it said on the can to just keep firing it in there.

Gonna try to track down a service manual and carb kit. Maybe a water pump kit, too. Any other kits I should pick up while I'm at it? Fuel pump, etc? (without spending too too much cash and effort)

I wouldn't put a new fuel pump on it yet. The only reason I put one on mine is because it was cracked in half, plus they are pretty expensive (100 something bucks) I would get a carb rebuild kit, water pump kit, maybe lower unit seals
