If it won't plane after the adjustment I would be checking your spark. It may be running on one cylinder. It should plane a 14 footer with one (or two) people without any problem. Rick.

It depends on the type of spark tester you have. Mine screws outward so as to increase the space between the tip of the screw and the electrode the spark is comming from. It needs to be able to jump a fixed distance to have a hot enough spark to run the motor.

Re: Outboard Newbie! Johnson 9.5hp

Hey guys,

Had the boat out yesterday for a bit of fishing. The motor ran well but with two of us in the boat I could only get 9mph out of the motor.

The old metal gas tank definitely has a hole in it now as when my buddy was grabbing it out of the truck to put in the boat the already wiggly handle broke right off!

On a plus note, we put the first fish in the boat! Just a small rainbow but a fish nonetheless.

What do you guys think my next step should be in troubleshooting power issues?

Thanks,

Nathan

I'm not quite sure you have any power issues around 10 mph with 2 people in the boat is pretty good. Me and a friend in my 14' get around 11 or 12 mph. Weight is a very important issue in small boats.

Ok. Thanks. That's encouraging. I had your number of 17mph in mind but did not get the chance to try it with just myself in the boat.

You will be able to get that with just you in the boat, most of the time she will only push around 15, but I hit a nice stretch of smooth water and she just barely hit 17 on the gps. take her out by yourself and let us know what kind of numbers you get.
