Outboard paint?

Curious, does the paint on an outboard serve any purpose other than looks?
I have an older outboard I just took all the paint off of, so I could repaint it and it looks pretty sharp with just the aluminum or whatever the metal is.

Thanks

The thing is it won't look good for long when it begins to tarnish, it will take more maintenance to keep it looking good. If you use it in salt water then it will corrode rapidly.

Ok, thanks. I wasn't sure. I know most if not all pre-war models are all metal and not painted. Do you happen to know if a clear coat would adhere to the aluminum? Aluminum is rather finicky on paint especially with non-etching paint.

Yah I would say the clear coat would start coming off pretty quick. Just get some JVV's best or shark hide aluminum cleaner and use it once a year, that would be easiest.
