My 60hp Mariner 1984 will start and idle ok but dies whenever I advance the throttle past 1/2 way. It wont go over 2000 rpm, it just bogs down and quits. In neutral in will rev up past 5000 rpm and sounds fine. What might be the problem.

It sounds like a fuel problem. Next time it dies check the bulb and see if it is hard. If it’s soft then you have a leak or a bad fuel pump. Just an idea!

My 40HP Merc does the same thing and I think I got it figured out. Looks like it's the switch box not allowing any spark to 2 of the 4 cylinders. Try checking spark at all of your cylinders. It's an easy test and may help you narrow it down between a fuel or electrical problem. If no spark then there are several voltage tests you can do to determine the defective component (at no cost).

Hi Jefferson,
Most outboard carbs have intermediat fuel openings that are located just in front of the throttle plates. The purpose of these is to act similar to the accelerator pump found on 4 stroke carbs. They are supposed to help eliminate the dead spot from idle to advance throttle. If these openings become plugged it will cause a problem like the one you are describing. Sounds like it's time for a good carb. cleaning
Hope this helps

Re: outboard stalls when advancing throttle past idle speed

Jefferson, I went through the same problem a month or so ago. Found out it was the hose that goes to the fuel filter. Just before it connected to the fuel filter, the clamp was not tight enough. Mine would idle and die after trying to go past 1/4 throttle. Just check all clamps on the entire fuel line. Also check fuel filter and see that no air is getting in.
You can try, while the motor is running, just move the fuel hose where the clamps are: each end of bulb, by fuel filter, where it connects to the tank. It is most probably air coming in somewhere where it should not.
Happy boating :D
