Outboard Starting Problem

I have a Suzuki DT50 and when I go to start it I get just a click. I thought it was the battery and the cables so I changed them and charged the battery. Same result.

I tried moving the fly wheel by hand. I can turn it 180 degrees in the opposite direction and then it hits a hard stop. I then try to use the starter and it turns the 180 degrees and hits another hard stop. I can turn it in the reverse direction then use the starter, but it will not move past the same point.

Any ideas? Is there a valve or something in the way?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Outboard Starting Problem

Is it a clunking stop or a soft stop. If it's soft it's just hitting the compression point in the cylinder. If it's a clunking, abrupt stop you got something more serious.

Re: Outboard Starting Problem

i've had a similar problem with a lawn mower engine...a loose nut or bolt or metal piece may be stuck to one of the magnets under the flywheel and jams itself against something as it rotates 180 degrees. maybe remove the flywheel and check for this before ripping into the engine. hope this works for you! good luck!

Re: Outboard Starting Problem

It is broke, Ben. Something internal, either in the engine or the gearcase, has come loose or broken off to block the crank from turning.

Get a factory Service Manual and tear it apart far enough to discover the problem. There is a chance that it is something simple and easy to fix, but more likely it is major and terminal.
