Re: Outboard up or down when traveling

I think it's easier on the boat and motor bracket if their left down but that will only work if the motor doesn't hang down below say the level of the trailer frame. I tow most of my smaller boats with them down but those are on higher slung roller trailers, on those with lower trailers, I either tow up with a transom saver or on boats with smaller motors, if it's a long run, I'll pull the motor and lay it on a blanket in the boat and rehang the motor at the ramp.

Be very cautious of sleeping or cell phone using drivers, I've had two motors damaged by people running into the motor at stop lights. One trolling motor and one outboard.
One driver had cash in pocket to make it better, he just shelled out the cash for the motor he wrecked and apologized, the other chose to make a fight of it, got belligerent, and lost. He thought that it was my fault that the motor was sticking out from the back of the boat 28". Then tried to drive off. (Note to those kind of drivers, one guy in a Jag vs 4 250+lb/6' + tall fisherman at 3 am is no match, don't get loud, aggressive, or make physical threats after ruining their day of fishing with your sleep driving). (The fact that more than one of them were police officers didn't help him much either). Some big guys can be pretty ornery at 3 AM when you smash their boat motor at the gas station.

I'm trying to load a picture off my phone when I towed my boat home. I moved it with both outdrives down, but when you see the trailer set up, you will see why. Out outboard set ups we always towed with the motor up, but my current boat towing with them down is no issue.

I have close to a foot of ground clearance with my motor down, but i put it up, with no transom saver,

I don't think I could make a transom saver work with my trailer, the back bar on the trailer is too far under the stern.

So is mine but I made one with some tube and a couple of angles to suit. Works great.

Just to mix things up a bit...

I travel with mine partially tilted. (150 HP Looper) I tilt them up until they come off the trim piston. then slightly back down until they just make contact with the piston. I figgure that the main cylinder and the two pistons give the most support. I dont like the engine tilt lock because the engines seem tilted too much causing a see saw motion on the transom instead of up and down motion.

No one uses transom savers here either. (SW Fla)

Sooo who's right?

+1, plenty of ground clearance. I also strap my steering wheel to keep engine straight. Pump my carb bowls full too, so the floats won't bounce around beating up the needles.

I dont have a conventional transom saver, I have a trim lock, but I am pretty sure that most attach the trailer.

Most outboards have trim lock but a transom saver will keep the weight of the motor from bouncing on the transom... aka "transom saver".. also if you plan on using one don't trim down on it hard just enough to keep it there..

Re: Outboard up or down when traveling

on my pontoon I do have about 14 inches of clearance, but coming out the drive way and stopping at the gas station present a small problem , where by I usually trim it up to about 5 - 6 additional inches.

My question : is it bad / hard on the trim tilt unit to ride with it in any other position other than straight down ??? even with some of the weight on the transom saver, there would still be a lot of weight bouncing on the trim/tilt ....right ???

Here is a photo showing the outdrives as they sit on my trailer. Ignore the boat being messy, and the dark photo!

Re: Outboard up or down when traveling

Can anyone tell me how they have there outboard motor when traveling.Do you tilt it up or do you keep it down on long trips.I would think that when it's down there is less pressure on the transom.Let me know what you guys think

Well, what kind of boat are you pulling? And what size motor? I never tilt it up as I have clearance no matter how far the trip. On my OMC I lock the pin in the highest transom setting, and then lock the tilt to prevent bouncing. Never been a problem for that 1964 fiberglass transom. Just remember to put the motor in gear to prevent the prop from spinning during transit.

On my Merc, I set the pin high as well, and even with no lock I've never had any issues. I also can't see trailering as being detrimental to the transom; at least no more than driving the boat would be.
