Outdrive damage question

Had the boat out on the river for the first time this spring and hit a submerged log. Boat runs fine, no vibrations. The only damage I can find is a small ding the that looks like someone tapped it wit ha chisel - see pics. The drive oil level is okay, but water is draining from this hole, indicated it does go through to the inside of the drive - would this be getting into the drive lube?

Aluminum props get banged up, dented and twisted all the time without major damage to the drive. If a slight ding is all you have, no problem.
That hole is your speedometer pickup hole on the drive. It should have water in it.

Tahoe, don't feel too bad about never noticing. I meet a person every time I inspect a wrecked car that didn't notice all their door dings and paint chips. But they are sure they weren't there before, they must have happened in the accident. I guees the rust in the paint chips took hold in the two days since the accident. :D

But, regarding that hole, if your speedo every stops working, check that hole first, and make sure it isn't clogged with debris. It'll save you a lot of hassle!

KaGee
ya gotta admit, we coulda had a great time :) :) .
nothing like doing a compression test and the customer is watching all nervous like an expectant parent and ill look up and say, man that one is a blown hole. you can see them stiffen:) :) . sometimes even a lowlife tech has to play :)

Tahoe---how fast were you going? You might drain and change the lower unit lube just to be safe---if water comes out before the oil, call you insurance company and get it to the shop for a compression check.
