outdrive nipple blunder

I have had to replace the hose from the transom to the bellhousing for the alpha one gen II oil feed. the "gravity feed".So I got the right hose and was putting it on today. WhenI removed the old one a piece of the nipple came with it. I dont see how the nipple would come off. But it is not air/water/or oil tight. So here is what I am thinking.
1. I could try and patch the crack in he nipple with some jb weld or plumers weld.
2. I could change the nipple, But would this require taking the engine out and working on the transom from the inside. Which I would had to do for something as dumb as this little nipple....
3. Is there a way to just block off the oil passage and forget the bottle. That was it will be like the alpha gen 2's with out the oil check bottle?

Thanks in advance
Kris

Re: outdrive nipple blunder

I wondered how you got lucky enough not to break that plastic hose barb off that thru the transom fitting.
No you don't have to pull the engine, but it is in one of the worst possible places to try and get to.
Assuming you have the plastic thru transom fitting. Do you?
Either way, you have to replace it, forget any type of repair.

Look near the end of section 4A of the service manual for some drawings.
The newer style has an E clip inside the boat. I have removed and insalled them, always by feel, but it can be done.

It looks like a brass fitting not plastic. Where can I get the fitting? Can I just block off the oil hole on the drive and run with out the bottle? I am going to pull the engine eventually... so when I do i will change it but for the item bieng it owuld be nice to get back out there....

STUPID NIPPLE>>>>

p.s. it broke as my dog ran out of the house I go up to chase here with the hose in hand and it has a small crack.

Merc dealer or online Merc parts. The plastic was 98 and newer, I thought it was 96. Just under 20 bucks.
It's not an aftermarket part.

Somewhere between a PITA and Impossible, without actually being there and seeing what the access is, it's impossible to say.

A perfect example. Changing the raw water pump impeller on one boat may take an hour. The same engine and pump on a different boat may take a complete engine R&R to do the job. Which due to engineering stupidity, you can't remove the engine without taking the engine half apart first.

Kris, I just got done with this on my bravo drive, which is very similar except I have the newer style thru hull lube oil connector with the e-clip. Look in service manual #14 begining on page 4A-42 for the details on your drive.

I ended up pulling my motor since I had some other issues I needed to take care of. Hopefully, if your going to try to do this with the engine in place you have more room to get at it than I did... very tight.

LOL
Often say the same thing!
But we manage to get it done, by braille and bodily contortion.
