Well if someone can lose 6 very important nuts it is apparently me! All this time I thought the outdrive nuts were put up in a plastic ziplock with the other nuts/bolts but nope, they are gone! So.. after searching, I've found that they may be available at the local Napa, BUT, how can I be sure I have the right nut? I was hoping someone would know exactly the size/pitch of the nuts that I need? All I know is they are fine thread.. I called the local Merc shop and the guy acted like he didn't know why I would be replacing them and that they don't keep them in stock, and that I should just take a stud to the hardware store to match some SS replacements.

I guess the question is... does anybody know the exact size? 7/16, 1/2"?

Sure was nice to get the outdrive back on (and easily with a good alignment), but then no nuts so it's just hanging there.

Thanks guys..

Get the OEM nyloc nuts. They are NOT stainless steel, they are chrome plated brass. SS nuts on the SS studs will gall the threads and make it impossible to remove the nuts.
They are 7/16" fine threaded nuts if you can find brass nylocks.

Re: Outdrive nuts for the one-drive

Yeah I was just about to post that mercparts page to make for sure that was the right nuts. Dang, I guess $2.50 isn't bad for a lock nut... sure wish I could find the originals though! Heh..

Are the washers required? I don't remember taking any washers off, but I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I will look around at the hardware shops first.. 7/16" fine thread brass nyloks (won't hold my breath)

Thanks yall

that's item 13. they're part of the parts list. i'd sure want some there. i've got some there. they are beefer washers than ya get at the hardware store. i'd get the oem's for a replacement for them too.
they are chrome plated brass. SS nuts on the SS studs will gall the threads and make it impossible to remove the nuts.
thanks Don S for the correction. galling not anti corrosion. hopefully i'll file that in my memory for future use...

Put some SS nylocs on a SS bolt or stud sometime and have it go bad on ya, trust me, you WILL remember. Been there, done that.

Yeah Don, I have unfortunately seen that too many times in the paper/chemical mills I've been in. Definately not fun... easier to cut the dang thing off. Anti-sieze is a good friend!

LOL, not in the marine world. We call in Ever-sieze. Especially if you use the zinc based product.

if i'm lucky, i will pass and learn from your experience....;):)

there was just recently an article that had some info about galling in one of them trailer boat magazines. sure sounds miserable. sounded like almost more than welded together... a real bummer if it occurs..

Quickie on this subject.. found a set of the outdrive nuts over at ebasic, but it says they are for R, MR, Alpha. I wonder if they all use the same stud size? Only reason I'm wondering is because it comes with the nuts and washers and it still half the price at mercparts. http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/pc/MAL9-72005/MER4F
What do you guys think?

Don't know why I didn't think to before, but I checked the part numbers for the nuts on the R/MR/Alpha drives and they are different numbers than the nuts for my I-drive... so guess they are different. Darn..

MAL9-72005
The MAL tells me it's a Mallory part. Personally, I would chance galling and using SS nuts from NAPA before I would use a Mallory part. But that's just me.
The size of the nuts is the same on all the drives, and use the washers.

Ah yep found the same part on iboats... mallory alright. Should I pay the $3.50/piece for oem nut/washers or go with a SS from napa? If yall were in my position? Guess $21 on nuts isn't that bad since they'll probably last several years.

Stupid nuts..

I would buy the OEM nuts and washers before ever installing SS nuts.

Don, I'm with you on this, but when I had a cracked locknut on my Alpha 1 Gen 2, I went to my local M/C dealer (MarineMax) and they gave me a SS nut in a Mercruiser package (11-859116). The cracked nut I had was a flanged, brass locknut and the guy told me that M/C no longer offers a brass locknut, only stainless. I'd like to find a set of the brass, flanged locknuts.

Re: Outdrive nuts for the one-drive

I went with the oem nuts from mercruiserparts, but since we are still talking about it, I'm curious.. If you were to use a SS nut, would it be a good idea to use some anti-sieze on the threads? Shouldn't that help prevent the galling? That's what we used to do at work when we had ss hardware. Maybe the water would over time wash the anti sieze out, I dunno..

Well, I can't really say. The replacement nut was not shiney like chrome, it was sort of dull, like stainless and when the guy said stainless, I just thought, it must be stainless. Knowing that, I used a little dab of waterproof grease when I put that one on. I'm pulling the boat next week for spring service so I guess I'll find out soon enough.
