I drain mine atleast once a year (more if I think I might have hit something etc). I figure taht for the couple bucks it costs for the oil...it is worth it to know that nothing is grinding or leaking.

Re: Outdrive oil change frequency.

Every 100 hours or every year, which ever comes first is what the manufactures recommend.
If you change the gear lube during winterization, you will also find if water happens to get in your drive during the season. Which is much better than having your drive sit with water on the bearings and gears all winter........

Outdrive oil change frequency.

How often should you change the gear oil in the outdrive unit? I have had the same boat for 13 years and have been changing it about every 2 seasons. Should it be done every year?

If this is a trailered boat or if you store it on land every winter, change the outdrive lube at that time. This is the only way you will know if you have any seal issues (water getting into drive), BEFORE you do serious damage. You can do it yourself in less than an hour.

Not sure where that information came from, but here is from a Merc owners manual, and the service manual says the same thing.
