Re: outdrive paint

mercruiser recommends touching up your drive with quicksilver phantom black paint

some anti-fouling paints contain metals that will react with the aluminum in the drive and will cause massive corrosion in a short period of time

this is why you see the 2-3" gap between the bottom paint and transom plates on some boats

Re: outdrive paint

I've seen very detailed recommendations that include stripping, acid etching, and using two part paints and also hear people talk about just grabbing a spray can of rustoleum in your favorite color. For what it's worth, I think it makes a big difference if it's a freshwater trailer queen or a saltwater boat that spends it's life in the water. If you do a google search for "outdrive painting" you'll see that the opinions and methods vary.

Since mine is a freshwater trailer boat, I scrubbed it down with detergent to degrease, washed with mild soap and a greenie pad and then went over it with 400 grit wet/dry emory cloth. I touched up the bare spots with a self etching primer and then sprayed several coats of an aftermarket outdrive paint. Some say that you should also wash the aluminum down with a vinegar/water wash but I thought that was for painting galvanized.

I think you need to look at your application to determine how much effort is warranted.

Mercury have very good re-painting instructions in their manuals. The procedure they recommend is similar to what's used in industry for painting aluminum.

There are proper aluminum metal prep solutions available from body shop suppliers, the most important being proper cleaning/corrosion elimination and a chromate conversion coat using a product such as Alodine. Then a proper epoxy primer and a quality urethane top coat. No rattle cans. The paint is all two part stuff.

I worked in the industrial painting business for 30 years designing the factory equipment and have seen what works.

I have no information regarding A/F paint but was under the impression that the good stuff had been banned.

Re: outdrive paint

my outdrive is off the boat sitting pretty on my new home built stand. well not so pretty cause it does spend its summers in salt water. i have a slip. its been painted before with outdrive anti foiling spray paint but has some barnacle growth and needs to be freshened up. i planned on scuffing and repainting with antifouling prop and drive paint. i was just wondering if anyone made it in gloss black instead of flat. it doesn't really make a difference cause i never see it but i figured id check. they make it in flat black, grey, white and "new" clear. i suppose i could always repaint it with the quicksilver phantom black enamel and then clear coat it with antifouling. man im bored. winter sucks. :(
