Re: outdrive woes pt II

Had the same problem with mine Kris,
In the center of the unit on the boat, under the exhaust ports is a grooved metal tang about the size of your thumb, in the center of the outdrive under the exhaust port is a metal tongue that must be aligned to go into the groove on the bell housing, it tends to rotate out of alignment and causes the drive to stop dead in its tracks about where your at. :)

Re: outdrive woes pt II

update I tried bumping the starter and i sheded the bungee that was holding pressure on the prop. Which means that it is engaged with the coupler some what ... I mean if it wasn't in the flywheel and coupler wouldnt turn the prop right? Also I cant rotate the prop by hand any moe. So if that is the case why am i stuck about 1 and half inchs away. After some seriuos mule kickng I got a hammer out with no avail. i would use a lift but this dam wswim platform is in the way and seriuos pain to remove.

I'm assumming that you've physically crawled under the drive and seen that the foward gear is lined up?

my 0.02. some things have already been mentioned but need verifying from time to time. gear selector in forward. outdrive drive shaft in forward position. you can put your foot on the left side of the prop on the drive and push hard and rotate the drive shaft to align the splines. double check the alignment again. gear selector slide has to be straight so it will fit into the housing. i had trouble with the seal that goes around the outdrive and had better luck putting it in the housing first then sliding the drive in. the yoke shaft has to be in far enough so the u-joints don't flop down and keep the drive from sliding in. i had to reach in the gap and lift up my u-joints and slide the shaft in more. change the angle of the boat to the drive by raising or lowering the trailer, i even aired my tires up more to get clearance off the floor. sometimes you just have to walk away and come back later. i tried separating the upper and lower once but it was too much trouble to mate the lower back on. AND while doing all this, you have to make sure the water passage o-ring stays in place!!! good luck, been there.

The trim rams usually have to be lifted and tied up to be out of the way, else the trim ram ends will butt against the bosses on the drive end.

From the pics showing the gap you have to cross, your trim rams are resting on the drive. Unless you've got extra help, you'll have the problem above.

Can't think of anything else that will stop you.

Good luck.

oudrive is on. I had a mechanic come over and we worked on it together here was the problem. My bar for some reason would slide right on he had an older bar an it would only go in half way. we looked at the engine mounts and in the back where it mounts to the drive I was mssing the spacers. STUPID ME... anyways I put the spacers in and it went in in 5 mins
